I didn't know where else to ask this and not got honest answers. I know I could ask in the general forum but not sure how well that well that would go. I've heard that if one liked BG then one should play Dragon Age because Dragon Aga is a worthy successor. How true is this?
DA:Origins is a good game. Not quite the same "feel" as BG, but still really good. I personally could not get into DA:II (I have tried multiple times, I just get bored), and I have not played DG:Inquisition so I cannot speak to it.

If you are looking for a spiritual successor I recommend Pillars of Eternity. It has become one of my favorite RPGs, and I think it "feels" more like BG than Dragon Age.

I was just wondering because I've read where it is quoted as being a good successor to BG. I'm very leary when I read this because I've heard it said of other games and it never turns out to be true.

During the development stage of Dragon Age Origins, Bioware were saying things along the lines of "they were returning to their roots" and were "making a spiritual successor (DA:O) to the Baldur's Gate series". This is where this thing about it being a successor comes from. In reality it didn't turn out that way... it being a spiritual successor I mean. DA:O is a fantastic game, but it is far, far too "off the path" to be considered a successor to BG. So no, it isn't, and you shouldn't play DA:O hoping to re-savour some of the Baldur's Gate experiences. Play Pillars of Eternity for that. But don't dismiss DA:O. As I already said, it's a fantastic game.

I've got it on my wishlist so I'm willing to give it a chance. I just wanted to check out what other BG players had to say about Dragon Age being a worthy successor to BG. I didn't think it was true but I thought I'd see what others had to say. I'm going to check out Pillars too but I have to wait until I have the money and I can buy a new gaming laptop.

It's true. Take that from someone who has played the IE RPGs since their inception and written an in-depth retrospective on Baldur's Gate.
Wouldn't call DAO a spiritual successor to BG either. They are too different, and DAO have a very different "feeling" than in BG. It's a good game, but you also have to be prepared for an impressive amount of combat. I actually never got through the whole thing due to that. Even turned the difficulty down to easiest to hack through faster, but eventually got too bored to bother.

Pillars of Eternity is a different kettle of fish. It plays and feels much more like the BG games. Still not as great as BG I would say, but a bloody good game, and the best RPG in absolute ages.

If you don't have a rig ready for Pillars, then you can give DAO a go instead. It's a good game, just be prepared that it isn't "BG 3".
Yup, play Pillars of Eternity for spiritual successor, personally I disliked Dragon Age: Origins, but I'm in the minority.
I can't speak for Dragon Age: Origins since I haven't played it yet (I won't touch anything with DRM), but I have it on my wishlist. Pillars of Eternity however, I wholeheartedly agree with others that it's the best spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate right now. There are some differences of course, especially certain combat machnics, but when I was walking through the wilderness and exploring I thought to myself "This feels like home".
I love both Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age equally. However, like others mentioned in this topic, they are different games. Here are the differences.

Gameplay: You control 1 character in 3rd person perspective and others follow you. You can switch to any party member but the general feeling of "controlling the whole party" is missing in Dragon Age. Most of the time you will configure other characters' AI and you wont even touch them. They will do their thing. Enemies are way too easy. In Baldur's gate almost every encounter was a challenge. That is definitely not the case in Dragon Age. You will cut through enemies like knife in butter. A soft butter that is.

Races/Classes: Remember the amount of classes and races in Baldur's Gate? You can forget about that cos there are only 3 races and 3 classes.

Spell Variety: Baldur's Gate had an insane amount of spells that would always keep you on your toes while fighting a mage. Thats not the case in DA. The spell variety is very narrow and I dont remember any enemy charming any of my characters.

Linearity: I personally found DA very linear since in almost all maps you can only go one direction and you cant move off the road. That makes things easier but you decide weather this is better or worse.

That doesnt mean that DA is a worse game however. It is just different and I had lots of fun during my 2 playthroughs.
I'll probably get Dragon Age but I'm not going to be in any rush to do so. Pillars on the hand I'll buy it as soon as possible.
