GUYVER03: MY LAPTOP WAS RENDERED USELESS BY MICROSOFT WINDOWS 10 FORCED UPDATE. All my data was unrecoverable and lost my gog.account as well as my purchase. I recently was able to get back on line only to find out that
gog.com had no record of my previous purchase.

fr33kSh0w2012: Your lucky I had 10 to 15 years of SAVE GAMES WIPED OUT with that Forced update way back when I was like 31 these were advanced level saves that took me up to ten years to get to, Games saves like save #144 in ELDERSCROLLS 5 skyrim which I bought the game when it first came out and got up to legendary status and other games where I was at advanced levels only to have them erased in a heartbeat thanks to microshots Forced Ripoff update. 10 to 15 years of HARD WORK all my old saves erased I am still 3 years on FUMING about it!
There's a reason i turn off automatic updates... on every machine i use...

Oh worse thing, the ELUA clearly states that Microsoft isn't responsible if they ruin your data... so you're SOL.

real.geizterfahr: I have a client who has something similar as his password. The funny part: He has a sticky note with his password (and username, which is "first + last name") on the backside of his monitor! And he always complains to me when a website or service won't allow him to set this as his password, because it requires a password with at least 8 characters, a capital letter, a number and a special character. His password doesn't fulfill any of these requirements :P
Wow...

In recent years i've moved to a password generator using a master password and hashing to generate a 30 character string for me... that way i don't have to remember 'Was it password a? password b? With or without upper case? did i need a 1 to satisfy the password requirements? maybe it was Password C.... it's definitely not password D..."

real.geizterfahr: Password manager? Forget it. He doesn't want to use one. He wants HIS password and he wants it to be safe (I told him that it doesn't work like that). No way to help this guy. I told him he'll definitely be hacked one day and probably lose access to some of his accounts before I can react, but he's still using that silly password. And he's not exactly someone who's careful with apps, websites and mails. He installs and opens everything, because someone told him that Macs are very secure machines.
Eventually it's going to get up with him and he'll fail.

Ugg...

I must be missing something, because I'm pretty sure Microsoft stopped giving free copies to everyone. If I wanted to 'upgrade', I'd have to pay.

Unless this happened ages ago and the forums are glitching & saying this was posted yeseterday.

Lol noone has some sympathy for the poor OP..

Btw are you really sure that your data is unrecoverable?

Anyway, the first rule of computing is "make backups", so sorry brudda..

Considering they wanted everyone to upgrade and if you had a pirated copy of windows you could get a legit version of 10...

And then the 'free copies' were still available but they weren't pushing the malware based updates to force/trick you into upgrading...

No, Microsoft is moving towards 'Windows as a service' so you have less control of it than before, with the inclusion of Solitaire with ads, unless you pay to remove the ads...

Actually with as much as Windows 10 spies on you It's full blown malware at this point. And don't worry if you turn stuff off, windows will happily ignore your settings at a later date and turn them back on... Especially after forced updates...

Hmmm reminds me, anyone remember the Xbox One Controversy? Where if the Xbox wasn't connected to a constant 24/7 internet that games that couldn't verify their authenticity would lock down after 48 hours? I feel this is likely going to be a very similar story (if it isn't already) with windows 10...

But i'm totally cynical of Microsoft and wouldn't push anything past them.

I don't think the "forced update" was an upgrade from e.g. Windows 7/8 to 10, but how Windows 10 forces you to take Windows updates by default. So the OP was already a Windows 10 user, who received some mandatory (big?) update from Microsoft.

Maybe it was that "Creator's Build" I keep hearing about, or the "Magician's Box"? I wouldn't know as I am still on Windows 7, with the free, already validated, Windows 10 Pro update waiting on an USB memory stick. So far I haven't had a reason to (re-)install it on this PC, possibly I never will. I am sure my future PC (laptop) will have Windows 10 by default anyway, this can remain as my Windows 7 PC as long as it lives, or I live, whichever dies first.

No-one? I jumped off of a high cliff into ice cold water. How much sympathy do you want me to show then?

Ah, I see, no that makes sense now.

Thanks!
