Katzapult: Ok, I´ve considered buying Hyperlight Drifter, but if the following thread is correct, the game is abandoned on gog by the publisher. The steam version got way more updates.

https://www.gog.com/forum/hyper_light_drifter/changelog

Could somebody confirm this? If it´s true this publisher should be banned from gog.

Definitely not a game I want to buy anymore. (neither on gog nor on steam)
The timestamp of the GOG signature is 23 June 2017.
FWIW I didn't have problems playing it (except the difficulty, duh).
It uses invisible checkpoints + manual save/heal points. Enemies and medkits respawn you use a heal point and the area's boss is still alive.

If you're concerned about dev ethics, I highly recommend Hollow Knight. Not only it's a great game (better controls, better mechanics, tons of content, actually has a story -- HLD doesn't, it's just a collection of mood pieces), they've been releasing even more content for free and keeping the GOG version up to date.
Saves are only at checkpoints but
- there's a checkpoint near every boss except one (if a checkpoint seems to be far away, there has to be a shortcut that you missed)
- paths from checkpoint to boss don't have timed obstacles (like moving platforms that you have to wait for and then wait as they move to the destination) -- go as fast as you can
- especially hard optional bosses have on-the-spot unlimited retries that work even in permadeath mode.

tinyE: Isn't Dark Souls notoriously hard or am I thinking of something else?
avatar
Katzapult: It is kind of hard, but once you know how it´s ment to be played, it becomes much easier.
It's 3D, I couldn't even get the hang of moving around.

EDIT: There's Ghost of a Tale. It's an actual RPG and it's awesome.

Katzapult: Are there any Dark Souls like games on gog?

I already own dragon´s dogma, which is not exactly the same but kind of similar. I also own the witcher games. Is there anything else? Maye even closer to Dark Souls gameplay?
Some say that Lords of the Fallen is/are like Dark Souls... Don't know if it's on GoG (it's International Workers Day so I am too lazy to search :) )...
low rated
Dark Souls is not an RPG, and neither would be any other game that is similar to it. Dark Souls is an action/adventure game.

So the thread title/OP is basically asking for something that doesn't exist.

That's debatable, :-P but I guess you might be right about your point that those games are kind of unique. So it seems that I have to play them again and again until some devs try to copy the gameplay and release their title on gog.

Hollow Knight indeed looks interesting. Reminds me a bit of Castle Crashers in terms of style.

It's definitely an ARPG. But go ahead and propagate that your definition of RPG is the only one that exists.
ok, no dark souls... sadly... (that beeing said, i think i should give hollow knight a try) ...but what is the most difficult action-rpg on gog?

https://www.gog.com/game/hellblade_senuas_sacrifice is reportedly similarish.

This is indeed a very good game with great souls like atmosphere, but it's more on the easy side in terms of difficulty.

I know this is a bit of a necro, but is it generally recommended to use a controller for these 'souls-like' games? I haven't played DS or any games like it, but I'm guessing a controller would be preferred, as they look a bit console-y. The Surge on GOG looks really cool, so might give that a try at some point :-)

I've played Hellblade and Lords of the Fallen, and both were fine with M+K. As soon as a game has freelook I prefer mouse over gamepad. I find looking around with a gamepad really clumsy.

For other games I'd recommend to read reviews or ask in the forums. Good PC controls are sometimes a neglected feature.

Most games are perfectly playable on a keyboard and mouse. The only case where controller is truly preferable would be fighting games and probably racing games. Use the device you are more comfortable with, not what somebody else tells you to use.

The Surge is pretty good and I can recommend it.

Lords of the Fallen is one as well. Controllers would probably be recommended for most players, though some will excel with KB/M. There's no reason not to use KB/M except that for a lot of users, it's more awkward for TPP games.
Ok, thanks for the advice. I'll give The Surge a try with M+K and see how it goes.
Add Hellpoint to this ongoing list.
