I guess off the top of my head, the first thing that comes to mind is volunteering to help build houses with a charity in a remote area of Appalachia.

We didn't actually meet the folks who would be getting these particular houses, but we did get to visit with a lot of families in the area, and volunteered at one of the food banks. Aside from being emotionally touching at times, it really did help me get to understand some people whose lives were really different than mine. I thought I grew up poorish in a small town, but these areas were really remote, and well beyond poverty.

Did my volunteering really do much to change that? No. So it probably changed me more than I changed anyone else.

Instead of the typical Xmas gift exchange at the office, I once had an employer who organized all employees into groups of about 7 and we were randomly assigned a charity for the Holidays. One group helped prepare meals for the homeless at one of the local shelters; another group would bring some holiday cheer at a children's hospital; another group helped hand out groceries to poor families at the food bank, etc. Funny thing is that nobody really wanted to participate in such activities in the beginning, but once we were on site, it was such an eye-opening experience. So many emotions! And it felt wonderful to help others.

During the pandemic early days, a neighbor knocked on my door one day and handed me a small box without saying much. By the time I opened it and saw that it contained face masks, he was already walking away. I wasn't sure how to react at that time but it definitely changed my day for the better.
