Just have this idea for a topic.
* Which genres of video games do you gravitate toward? In particular, which genres would you be willing to invest more money (and disk space) into, and which genres are you willing to get games that maybe haven't received the best reviews? For me, these would be (turn based) RPGs, particularly Wizardry-likes and SaGa-likes (though note that I'm still not willing to submit to DRM for them, or to pirate modern games).
* Which genres are more off genres, in that you wouldn't buy games of those genres unless there was some other aspect of the game that really grabs you? An example for me would be platformers, especially non-Metroidvania ones like Celeste.
* What genres do you avoid, and won't play even if the game is really good and you can (legally) get it for free? (This includes genres that you are not capable of playing at all.) For me, this would include sports games, fighting games, MMOs, pure First Person Shooters (without RPG or other genre elements), other multiplayer only games, and music games in which the electric guitar features prominently.

Genres I like:
RPG (JRPG, WRPG)
FPS
(Typically not a huge fan of those put together like Fallout 3+)
ARPG (Souls-likes, Metroid-vanias, and isometric mouse controls like Diablo or GrimDawn)

Genres I absolutely abhor
RTS
TBS
Puzzle games
RTT
I love adventure games best. Point & clicks, graphic adventures, text adventures, horror adventures, you name it. This includes adventures with light RPG elements, such as Quest For Glory. ( :

Puzzle games is another genre I love. Things like Tetris, Chip's Challenge, Pandora's Box are a joy to play.

I detest porn games! The act of degrading females just to attract little boys is disgusting to me! I was really disappointed when GOG started selling these types of games.

I'm also not a fan of hack & slash games.

Gravitate toward: strategy, point-and-click, action-adventure, RPG.

Off: shooters or just games with guns.

Avoid: horror.
Gravitate toward:
FPP/isometric, FPS, WRPG/ARPG, RTS, PnC, in action / adventure / puzzles / sci-fi / medieval / horror. Also, typical adrenaline games.

A new genre I'm actively seeking out is dungeon crawlers, like DnD Eye of the Beholder and Ambermoon on Amiga. Was never really interested in these old RPGs before until now.

Porn games can be fun if made right, like Leisure Suit Larry and Lula (haven't tried Biing! yet). The more degrading the better :P

Off:
Not usually a fan of 3. person games, turn-based (but HoMM is a fun classic), or platformers (exception is Little Nightmares).

Avoid:
MMO's, especially if they use a rootkit.
Can't stand anything JRPG or sport related games (exception is ski-or-die, or racers like SW Racer, the Burnout and Wipeout series, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit).

Gravitate towards: i like RPG, First Person Shooters, RTS, tycoons, sims, turn strategy games and point and click games (my favourite).

Off: platformer games and sand-box games.

Avoid: sports, flight simulation, japanese games (jrpg), mmorpg's, and car games.
Gravitate toward : strategy, sim, tycoon, puzzle/adventure and action/adventure games (e.g. tomb raider, GTA, Hirman etc.)

Off: Just about everything else to varying degrees, apart from sport games (except winter sport)

Avoid : Sport games (except winter sport)
Gravitate towards: Games with first-person perspective. I like first-person shooters but I'm not a fan of mindless shooting or too much horror games.

Off: platformers, isometric games, adventures, strategy, flight simulators, third person perspective games

Avoid: Sports, fighting, anything multiplayer, MMOs.
These all come with lots of caveats though, it's not a simple thing today, sadly.
There are both external and internal problems which can put me off a game within any given genre.

Gravitate towards:
STACS's (Space Trading And Combat Simulators)
Like Freelancer, Galaxy on Fire, Escape Velocity Nova.
[Major caveat: Need Tethered Third Person Chase Cam for 3D]
---
"Builders" (Collection of genres that includes a major building aspect)
Like Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, Terraria, No Man's Sky, Starbound, Pharaoh, Startopia, Anno 1404.
[No Major caveats]
---
4X (Not the same genre as Wargames or Grand Strategy at all)
Like Distant Worlds Universe, Space Empires IV, Imperium Galactica 2, Sword of the Stars.
[Major Caveats: Prefer Space setting, and not too war-focused]
---
Metroidvania's (Platformers with gated open world and abilites)
Like Hollow Knight, Timespinner and Rabi-Ribi
[Major caveats: No backstep/ledge-grabbing mechanic, no upside-down areas, no weird controller aiming]
---
Diablo-like (ARPG/H'n'S)
Like Diablo 1,2. Dungeon Siege 1,2. Sacred 1,2. Torchlight 1,2. Yes..the three's are absent for a reason. I call it the curse of the third iteration.
[No Major caveats]

Off:
Can't list them all sadly. So so many.
It depends entirely on the game.

Avoid:
Visual Novels
Walking Simulators
Sports games
RTS
TTS
Horror
Thriller
Genres I'm down for- ARPGs like Grim Dawn, Turn-Based RPGs like Dragon Quest, Metroidvanias, Roguelikes/Mystery Dungeons, campaign centered FPSes like Quake, melee

Offgenres- not really sure what that is, even with the description. But i do like Celeste.

Not Down for- Sports games, point-n-clicks, economy simulators like Sim City. Also here we have horse race betting games at arcades, looks so damn boring.

Games i wish i was better at - Rhythm games, those airplane battle simulations.
* Favorites: story-oriented or exploration-rich RPG, (preferably real time) dungeon crawler, Point-and-Click adventure, (especially 3D collectathon or metroidvania) platformer, action adventure, open world, FPS with fun settings or powers, first person puzzler, narrative experiments/walking simulators, Zelda-likes, cart racer, co-op

* Off: JRPG, Rogue-like, Souls-like, Shmup, brawler, regular puzzle games, card games, turn-based tactics (depends on the setting and whether it leans more towards RPG or strategy)

* Avoid: MMO, MOBA, most PvP multiplayer, war games, strategy, (flight) simulation, sports, regular racing, Versus fighting games, horror with hide from the monster mechanics, zombie survival, stealth games (especially those with instant fail states), purely score based games, (with very, very rare exceptions:) RPG Maker games, Visual novels, Kinetic novels, Hidden Object games

Cinematic story-games
Walking sims
"Artsy" indie games
Cartoony art-style
Porn games made for degenerate weirdos
Basically any game where gameplay isn't the focus

Leroux: * Avoid: [...] stealth games (especially those with instant fail states)
I prefer to take this a step further. I avoid any game that contains any game that has an insta-fail stealth section that can't be skipped or bypassed somehow, including the likes of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. (The one exception is Zelda: Majora's Mask, as the first stealth section is incredibly easy (especially if you go at night), and the second one is trivial if you get the Stone Mask first (in the original; in the 3DS version apparently you have to get past the first few guards to get that mask. note that Zelda: The Wind Waker is *not* an exception, and I haven't played the game despite owning a copy because of this.)
Like:
RPG western both Baldurs style top-down and Skyrim/witcher style imho these are the best games give adventure story, char development, and unique interesting gaming area and feel
Adventure games except when the games universe is abstract nonsense sadly many fall into this category
Strategies these are the ones where you have to use your brain if well made
Crafting/survival cooperative games the best ones to play with bro and friends

Off:
some platformers like Ori, Hades and not the hard ones those are just too much pain to play
Showrunner from simulators this one is relaxing

Don't Like:
Modern shooters are so boring with their limited on rail gameplay,
JRPG these just look-alike games and I don't like that style at all, it is very childish unimaginative
Waste your time games: where the difficulty is artificially enchanted by random you/your team die and go start over and waste your 4+ hours game
Horror same as JRPG they are so similar, abandoned house with dark rooms, and occasional boo and chase scene ... boring

Hate/avoid:
visual novels these are not even games just garbage
walking simulators where they modeled an area and all you can do is just walk and explore ,same as with visual novels these are not games
mobile garbage games, nearly all of them are bad designed to waste your time/money
kiddie games the ones which got popular with the kid community cause some streamer made lame lulz videos about it
sports games these are made usually for the dumbest gamers and clearly tailored to milk them similarly to mobile games
arcade games/low effort indie games: imho these are just time wastes, why play these when there are better games you could play instead

I like western RPG the most and avoid any competitive multiplayer game.
