Lorfean: I agree that DS1 lacked depth and was very linear and repetitive, but I have to disagree with you on Obsidian... In my opinion the NWN2 series is, as far as single player goes, a vast improvement over NWN1. Sure, it took them a while after its initial release, but in it's current state NWN2 is great.

I can't say much about KotOR, simply because I don't seem to hold the original (or the sequel) in as high regard as some other people do... The first game was decent for me, and the second felt like more of the same but with slightly better writing in some places. Neither has stood the test of time very well. At all.

Fallout New Vegas, however, is probably the best game they've released to date and a MAJOR improvement over Fallout 3, IMO. I haven't played any of the DLC yet, so I can't say anything about that, but I'm playing it (I believe) on the second highest difficulty with hardcore mode enabled, and it's one of the best CRPG's I've played in a looong time.

And I can't say anything about Alpha Protocol either, as I haven't played it (yet). But I gotta say, after the disaster that was Dragon Age 2 (it actually managed to ruin the first game for me in terms of re-playability... go figure :-/ ) I've more or less dropped BioWare and started looking to Obsidian and CD Projekt RED for RPG's that suit my preferences. And I expect that Icewind Dale III announcement from Obsidian any day now... ;-)

Edit: Oh, and I think DS3 looks like it'll be fun! It reminds me of the Dark Alliance games on the PS2, which were great sofa co-op hack-and-slashers.
I agree that Nwn2 isn't bad and MotB is actually pretty good but the core game just felt like every other DnD story outthere. "Big evil guy wants to take over the world and you as lvl1 must stop him". We have seen this many times before. But yes the game itself was decent enough for a playthrough.
Fallout: NV is a game I played at the wrong time. I had purchased Fallout 3 GOTY and Fallout NV and played F3 for about 80 hours and loved it. Then I played NV and was probably burned out from those 80 hours and just got tired of the game. I played it for about 35 hours before I just lost interest and started playing DA2 which is also pretty damn poor. But I still have NV on my PC and maybe I should go back and give it a second chance? It gets an automatic -1 for being made by Obsidian but I'll have to admit that ghe game is actually well made (apart from the terrible bugs).
Let's just say I will not preorder DS3 since Obsidian made it.

DrakeFox: I find Alpha Protocol to be a fairly okay game though with a ton of issues. At least the removal of DRM removed a bunch of them.
Still the "action"/"Stealth" bits feel like something tacked on, which is sad since it's where you spend a large part of the game.
Where the game shines is in it's conversations which work quite well, the story seems okay (gotten about halfway through it).
It's too bad that they offer you the ability to customize your character quite a lot, but in the end there's too many areas where you MUST fight, the plot doesn't leave you a way to stealth or talk your way out of everything, which is kinda sad.

The console versions had heaps of technical issues too, but I've luckily never had too much trouble on the PC with those.

In the end, it's an okay spy themed game with interesting conversation system and simplified stealth and action sequences. A bit more polish on the stealth and the ability to solve all problems more than one way and it could've been great. As it is, it's okay for what it is. A narrative wrapped up in a (casual) game.
+1 to this and I completely agree with you.

I didn't know that someone could flip flop out've gaming based solely on E3.

I heard of many a gamer on forums flip flopping when it comes to consoles or game series, but not gaming itself.
dude, I like games ... but when it seems like everyone is loosing their shit over the latest Battlefield, or like how everyone got all worked up over that modern warfare leek a little while back, and I just don't care.

Or like DA/ME/TOR news ... I hate bioware! really, I do ... it's their fault that the RPG genera is in the crapper. Their the ones that started the trend of having "all character editor, no story" and then covering up that fact by over working the shit out of the conversations. Anyway, years ago I gave up on them ever putting out something that I would even remotely like, yet almost every day that I look a gaming news site there is at least one article screaming about Bioware.

No, I don't actually think I outgrew gaming ... but it sure seems like the industry "un-grew" me, however that concept is just plain weird to the point that I question if it actually IS me that is the problem.

hear u about modern warfare but battlefield isn't nearly as overly saturated a game, and mainly because of it being a greater alternative to cod is worth being excited for

It's not you. The accessibility and ubiquity of both consoles and even PCs grows every generation, making it easier for every man and his dog to play games. The market has changed since the 80's and 90's. That said, the average age of gamers on the whole is getting older. You'd think that the games themselves would be getting more mature in turn, but I suppose the pubescent male audience will always be largest. It isn't something unique to the game industry. Currently the highest grossing films are either comic book adaptations or romantic comedies. I have hope that as more people get older we will eventually see larger market for deeper more challenge games, but I'm not holding my breath. It can certainly sink far lower than this.

Nevermind E3 anyway, it's hardly representative of the state industry anymore than MTV is a state of the music industry.
There're just two games in the world, which would be sequels of existing ones, but anyway instabuy for me.

Heretic III (if it's an FPS like the first one, not an action like the second) and Myst VI.
I know it's not the same, but I don't look forward to many games coming out; instead, I look forward to buying old ones that I haven't played yet. "The Witcher 1" is on my list right now, and I'm excited to try it, and I don't have to wait ro release or anything. The last few games I have been looking forward to disappointed me, so much better to enjoy slightly older ones. :)

Lorfean: Yes, it can be regained. I lost my passion for gaming over a period of about 2 years when I was working at a big game development studio -- at first it was great, working with my biggest hobby, etc. But as crunch time set in, the company got into financial trouble, earlier designs were simplified in major ways to appeal to a broader audience, and people started getting cut... I got to see the ugly side of the gaming industry and it was just very, very depressing.

It's one thing to look at a game's development cycle from a distance, as a fan, and quite another to have it impact you and your friends' lives, sometimes in very negative ways. And so I lost my interest in games and eventually quit that job as we moved to a different city. It took almost as long (1,5 years) for me to really get back into gaming and GOG.com was actually a big part of that -- I started buying some classics that I'd never played before (Beyond Good & Evil and Psychonauts were the first, I believe) and enjoyed them immensely, and it kinda just grew from there.

I still enjoy older titles a lot more than the new ones though, and don't like the direction the industry seems to be taking (I'm looking at you BioWare!) but there are a couple of games I can honestly say I'm looking forward to. Diablo III and Batman: Arkham City come to mind :)
Did you like ARkham Asylum then?

Yes, I'm a huge Batman fan, so I loved Arkham Asylum.
