Roman5: Amen to that It's amazing how 8 years later that game is stil very presentable and is appealing to look at, not to mention how huge the world has gotten with many improvements Say what you want about the Management at Blizzard but one thing's for sure: Very talented Programmers and Artists work there

Elenarie: And Mists of Pandaria is even more detailed and beautiful. :)
Stylized MMOs age very well, it's one of the reasons many MMOs choose a stylized art direction.

Also, I've personally talked to more than a dozen ex-WOW artists and not a single one had anything good to say about working on WOW beyond the effect it had on their resume. I would deeply hesitate to say most of the artists are talented, most of the artists are told exactly what to do and granted no leeway whatsoever in executing. If you believe the art is inspired, the inspiration displayed is the inspiration of but a very few artists relative to the legion that have worked on it.

Lineage 2 still has better graphics than WOW, btw, despite being both older and going for a more realistic look and feel. The best thing I can say about WOW's art is that they make very good use of the wide range of the color palette, which is damned refreshing after looking at the majority of console titles these days.
I'm a little confused here. So we're talking about games that look like art, not those that are art, right?
Also, to add something to the discussion:

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron

The best looking game of this generation, seriously, this game is just like Okami, it looks beautiful now and it will still look gorgeous in 10-20 years
The obvious ones missing in my opinion:
- Machinarium
- Botanicula
- Braid
- Bastion
Edit : And Fez !

KiPhish: Hi guys, so I recently played "Really Big Sky" on my computer, and I gotta say, I was mesmerized by its graphics - it was like watching art in motion. Now, I know the gaming community is rather divisive about the whole "game is art" deal, but I find it wonderful, provided that it's done right. So I was just wondering what else is out there - strictly in terms of art direction. Here are a few I think is worthy to be mentioned, meaning they were especially stare-inducing: Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery - modern pixels done right Really Big Sky - chaotic, plasmic masterpiece LIMBO - the atmosphere...the atmosphere Waves - particles, particles, particles Splice - epic geneticist, epic splicing Everyday Shooter - visually musical
I also really liked the backgrounds in Braid. Some of them were like a vincent van gogh painting.
