Atrox

Atrox (2001)

by Joymax Co., Ltd., OK Interactive
Genres:Strategy, Real Time Strategy (RTS)
Themes:Science fiction
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:Atrox is astonishingly similar to Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft. The gameplay, the graphics, units, buildings, even single animations are extremely close to the original. The game is a real-time strategy game where the player controls one of three races (Hominides, Inteliom, Kreators) and tries to destroy all the others on the map. To accomplish this task, he can build a base with many different buildings such as weapon factories, barracks, power plants and so on. He also has to gather resources to build all his stuff, in this game, he needs to get Quark and some liquid crystal. The game features three different campaigns (one for each race) as well as skirmish mode, network and online play (the latter using a server).Show more

'Atrox' was the first game I bought when I was young. It is true that it is inferior to StarCraft. However, the graphics and sound were satisfactory. It would be nice to be able to compete with players from around the world through GOG Galaxy.

What a wonderful Starcraft clone! I originally found this game when browsing abandonware sites a few years ago, grabbing it due to its similar art style and UI to other RTS games I had played in the past. In short: if you can play Starcraft, you can play Atrox. Sure, the AI isnt to the same standard as Starcraft, and the game does have some jank (the abandonware copy I played would repeat "Your forces are under attack" every time a unit was attacked, without delay), but WOW there is a lot to love here! It has three factions, each with their own stories to play through in their single player campaigns. The game also includes the usual expected RTS additions, such as multiplayer and single player skirmish. The art direction is similar to that of Starcraft, at times even expanding upon the formula to add some beautiful animations that you would not have found in the game that it was cloning. As for the gameplay, as previously mentioned, its Starcraft with slightly worse enemy AI. Overall, its a phenomenal RTS that has a comfortable, nostalgic feel to it, while having a somewhat fresh take on a tried-and-true formula. If you like Starcraft and want to scratch that same itch, this will ABSOLUTLY give you the vibes your seeking out! Heres hoping that the game will be brought into the modern age with GOG, hopefully expanding upon the multiplayer offerings to drive the community even further. And if not, at least the abandonware versions currently work on modern systems
I enjoyed it back then. Remembered it a few times over the years but never found it anywhere. Not just a copy of starcraft. It deserves more attention and some face lift :)

Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon Deluxe
Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon DeluxeRailroad Tycoon is a game about the fascinating world of railroads: steel tracks stretching to the horizon, promising adventure and romance; steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, some of the largest machines man has ever built; nations transformed by the speed and strength that locomotives could achieve, eclipsing the puny power of man himself and the animals he could domesticate; the sounds of steam whistles, diesel horns, and clanging bells; a world of risk - natural disasters, poor economic times, and rival railroads; and a world of opportunity - money, prestige, and fame. Railroad Tycoon is maybe the most famous Tycoon game. Your goal is to build a railroad empire. You have to build your railroad, improve stations, manage your bank accounts and investments. You have to get the others from business or buy their miserable companies as cheap as possible. Show them who is the real and only one Railroad Tycoon.

Dune
DuneDune is a 1992 video game, based upon Frank Herbert's science fiction novel of the same name. Developed by Cryo Interactive, is the first of the Dune computer games. Dune blended adventure with economic and military strategy, and is considered by many the most immersive Dune computer game. Loosely following the story of the novel, the game casts the player as Paul Atreides, with the ultimate goal of driving the Harkonnen from Planet Dune, while managing spice extraction, military, and later, ecology through the native Fremen tribes. As the player progresses, his troops are equipped with weapons from "crysknives" to atomics, tap into Paul's latent psychic powers, and get acquainted with such characters from the book as Chani and Liet-Kynes.
