The game is a rough diamond that fell into oblivion due to conflict with the publisher and a lot of bugs and shortcomings at launch. The game is based on the original and innovative Mercury engine for the early 2000s, which allowed for the destruction of the environment to a certain extent. Open maps allowing for a variety of approaches to missions.
The game was ahead of its time in some aspects, but poor AI (both allies and enemies), optimization problems, crashes and shortcomings effectively buried it in the depths of history along with the studio that created it, Brat Designs. Presenting the game at launch as a killer of the original Halo also did not help this game.
I personally played the demo on my first computer in 2003 and was dazzled by the open map and explored it far and wide, spending many hours doing so. I even managed to find a hidden tank as an easter egg of the demo. The game can be found on the internet as abandonware but can cause problems when trying to run it. Not only because of its original state but also because of its age and the fact that it was created for completely different operating systems. A later version of the game from Xplosiv (original publisher was CDV Software) fixed (I think) some of the bugs but it was too little too late to save the game. It saddens me that the game ended with the message "To be continued." The original creators, Ed Scio and Jason Gee, will probably take to their graves the information about how the story of "Breed" was supposed to continue.
I have many great memories with this game. Even as an adult I created my own mouse pad design based on the art from this game, which I modified and assembled in a graphics program. Then in 1000x500 format and ordered it for my desk. I would put a picture of it here if I could. A game forgotten by many but still smolders somewhere in the hearts of a few.
