Drakengard 2

Drakengard 2 (2005)

by Cavia, Square Enix Product Development Division 10, Square Enix
Genres:Role-playing (RPG)
Themes:Action, Fantasy
Game modes:Single player
Story:Drakengard 2 is a direct sequel to the original Drakengard: the story revolves around Nowe, a boy raised by the dragon Legna, fighting against a tyrannical faction of Knights, encountering characters from the previous game and becoming entangled in the fate of the world. Like the original, Drakengard 2 combines on-foot hack and slash with aerial combat stages and RPG game mechanics. The previous game's producer, writer and character designer returned to their respective roles. The game was designed as a more mainstream game in light of the previous game's dark aesthetic and story. The game sold 206,000 copies by the end of 2005. Western reviews praised the story, but gave mixed opinions about the graphics and widely criticized the gameplay.Show more

Drakengard 2 may not be as canonically relevant to the NieR series as Drakengard 1 however I think it is worth experiencing especially if you want more story for the characters from the first game, even if they may be flawed. The gameplay has the same formula but is improved with far better control, more balanced difficulty and a party system which requires you to switch between members to do a different types of damage against enemies. The soundtrack again is incredible (best version of Growing Wings??) I think the storytelling is a bit clearer and although it doesn't have the same impact of the first game, I think it's worth experiencing afterwards!
I loved the romance between Manah & Nowe. It felt so nice to see Manah achieve a redemption arc & being able to find some semblance of a healthy relationship. What's more, seeing a continuation to my favorite hack-n-slash game was so uplifting.

Addictive game at the time with great boss battles, the first game is also good, I miss this DR 2. The new version that came out for the PS3 was not as good as this one...

Just like my story on part one, this was just so much fun back in the days. Very much of that time; deep yet simple and rewarding retries and just discovering on a perfect paced system and amazing combinations of playstyles. Never will forget the babies..

Fun thing about this game is that you get new endings opened so there is a reason to play again the game. I myself long ago almost cleared the game on hardest difficulty and probably would have got a new ending with it but my little brother as a small kid decided to tamper with my save files and poof. Problem is that I played this game a lot so I didn't have energy to start from very beginning so here's hoping a chance to see it through again on PC and at the final hurdle to get once again poofed save file.
Those games also need your vote!

Ambermoon
AmbermoonAmbermoon is the second game in Thalion's never-finished Amber trilogy that was started out by Amberstar. The sequel is set more than half a century after the first game, the world of Lyramion just starting to recover from the destruction caused by the collapse of the red moon. The original protagonist is an old, dying man as the game starts out. He summons his grandchild and tells him about a vision he had, of an old friend who supposedly died more than forty years ago and warned him of a great evil rising again. He sends the youth on a quest to seek that old friend and find out what is behind that vision. Concerning gameplay, Ambermoon is similar to its predecessor. The player initially controls only the main character, having the choice between a male and a female protagonist with several portraits each, but otherwise unable to customize them at that point. During the course of the game, additional characters may be recruited in various places in Lyramion; up to six form an active party that participates in combat. All characters can train physical attributes by specific NPCs in various towns, while some can also buy, learn, and cast offensive, supportive, and healing magic spells.

Parasite Eve II
Parasite Eve IIParasite Eve II is an action role-playing survival horror video game released exclusively for the PlayStation. The game was developed by Square and published in Japan in 1999 and in both North America and, unlike the previous game, in PAL regions in 2000. It is the sequel to Parasite Eve and the second game in the series of the same name. Parasite Eve II is set several years after the events in the original game. The protagonist from the first game, Aya Brea, also features in this game as the playable character. She becomes involved with another outbreak of Mitochondrial creatures. Gameplay diverges from the previous game: battles take place in real time and the area of action is less restrictive. The approach is more typical of traditional survival horror games, although some role-playing elements are retained.
