.Hack//Mutation (2002)

by CyberConnect2, Bandai
Genres:Role-playing (RPG), Adventure, Hack and slash/Beat 'em up
Themes:Action, Science fiction, Mystery
Game modes:Single player
Story:.Hack//Mutation is the second of a series of four games, titled .hack//Infection, .hack//Mutation, .hack//Outbreak, and .hack//Quarantine, features a "game within a game"; a fictional massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) called The World which does not require the player to connect to the Internet. Players may transfer their characters and data between games in the series. Each game comes with an extra DVD containing an episode of .hack//Liminality, the accompanying original video animation series which details fictional events that occur concurrently with the games. The games are part of a multimedia franchise called Project .hack which explores the mysterious origins of The World. Set after the events of the anime series .hack//Sign, the games focus on a player named Kite and his quest to discover why some users have become comatose as a result of playing The World. The search evolves into a deeper investigation of The World and its effects on the stability of the Internet.Show more

.hack unfortunately is the unloved middle child of Bandai Namco stuck between Digimon and SAO. The Sequel games from the "second season" of the .hack series were already remade, so it's only right to make these historic gems accessible...especially since the 25th Anniversary will be in a couple of years. Please just give these games a chance.

This was one of the first rpgs I ever played, after pokemon. I fell in love with the world, the characters, the level grind, all of it. the .hack series has always had a special place in my heart and I've been dying to be able to play them updated for pc. In these uncertain times, this game would bring a real spark of joy to my life.
.hack//IMOQ is probably my favourite set of PS2 games and one of my favourite franchises to this date. The old MMO aesthetic of the four/five games is a relic of a bygone era of gaming, with oldstyle menus to flip through, different and elemental areas to test your strength, quests for rare items and volume exclusive companions, and loads of NPCs to both trade with. I would love to see this game be available on GOG 💙

My human and I played all these games on stream, trying to preserve the experience as best we could. I'd love for our streams to not be the end of this game's story. It's well worth playing and absolutely holds up after all these years.
.Hack// Had such an intriguing story, that spanned various media, including videogames, anime, manga, and light novels. Unfortunately, .Hack// and it's story have been burried thanks to Bandai heavily promoting Sword Art Online. .Hack//IMOQ was one of the first games to really pique my interest in both anime and gaming! Now, as a streamer, I would love to show these games some love, and share these 4 games with my audience, because the series means that much to me, as i am unable to setup an emulator to play these games! Yes, it is a typical grindy RPG, but I found the story quite phenomenal, and still do to this day!

The .Hack franchise has always been near and dear to my my heart, from the game's, anime's, and all the mysterious untranslated works from way back when the internet was still in it's infant stages. And it all started with the original tetralogy. I still remember seeing both Infection and Mutation on store shelves at Best Buy, and being somewhere between 6-9 years old, being enamored by the box art. Compared to a majority of the 3D/CG box arts for games at younger kids, I just couldn't take my eyes off of it. Coming on over 2 decades later, I still look back at the visuals and atmosphere, hear the soundtrack, and think about all the memories I had and shared with friends as one of my most valuable treasures in this hobby. And as I know many, including myself, would love nothing more then to be able to go back in time and relive these treasured memories in a way that doesn't involve emulation or paying hundreds of clams for the whole series. Despite what anyone may or may not think about this game, for preservations sakes alone, at least having this series brought to 1 modern day platform would be yet another massive step forward to preserving the rich and cherished legacy gaming has left behind.

//Mutation is an iconic installment that ramps up the difficulty from the previous game while still easing the player into the story and tension. Having mastered the gameplay fundamentals in the first installment, the player now gets to focus on exploring more of The World and meeting the key characters. Imagine it's 2005 and you know nothing about WoW, but your best friend is a famously hardcore player. Your friend helps you make a new account, and then he is unconscious in the hospital, and the only thing you can think to do is bumble your way through this game to find clues. Now play //Mutation to see what happens next.

I played through the original .hack//Infection and it's sequels Mutation, Outbreak and Quarantine way back when they first dropped. These were the first games to truly be interconnected with each other and gave you a near fully immersive MMO experience without having to go online. They required a great deal of strategy and patience to pull off, which made every victory feel like something you truly accomplished. Each game came with an anime OVA that told the corresponding story to what was happening in the real world, making it worth the money spent on each game. I hope Bandai allows it to be ported to modern consoles and PCs.

Baldr Force
Baldr ForceIn the future, cyberspace has become exceedingly dominant. Armed conflicts and cyber-terrorism flourished. Giant mechas known as Simulacrums are utilized for battles within the cyberspace. Toru Souma is an expert hacker of the Steppenwolf group, which specializes in stealing and selling valuables from servers. One day, Toru was caught in a battle between the military organization FLAK and a terrorist group. In a series of events, his friend was killed. Stricken by grief, Toru decides to avenge his death and joins FLAK, only to unravel a much larger conspiracy. Baldr Force is a follow-up to Baldr Bullet. It uses a different scenario and character cast, but is very close to its predecessor gameplay-wise. Like in Baldr Bullet (and unlike Baldrhead), there is no exploration of any kind in the game, and all battles take place within confined areas as dictated by the plot. Combat system is nearly identical to that of the previous game, with the exception of "force crashes", powerful attacks that can be equipped on the protagonist's mech. The game's plot may branch depending on the decisions taken by the player during the visual novel-like portions.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake EaterMetal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the follow up to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. It is the first prequel in the series, taking the series to the year 1964. The player takes the role as the series' original antagonist, Big Boss, then known as Naked Snake. MGS3 is the first game in the series to take place in a jungle. This unique setting created an opportunity for new mechanics. The player can adapt to the environment by swapping Snake's camouflage, hunt animals and gather plants for food. This iteration in the series introduced a new feature in which the player must apply medicine and perform medical procedures on Snake if he is damaged in combat. Apart from the survival themed features, the controls and gameplay of the game are very similar to Metal Gear Solid 2. Like other Metal Gear games, the focus is on stealth, but the player can go through the entire game like a shooter if they choose to. Throughout the game Snake acquires weapons of all types; non-lethal firearms, handguns, sniper rifles, machine guns, shotguns, sub-machine guns, and explosives. Metal Gear Solid 3 was the first game to implement the CQC (close quarters combat) system. CQC allowed Snake to beat enemies down to knock them out, or put them in a chokehold to knock them out, kill them, or and/or question them. Metal Gear Solid 3's health system required the player to occasionally pause the game and treat Snake's ailments. When Snake is shot, there is a chance that the bullet didn't pass through him, requiring the player to use a knife to remove the bullet, apply disinfectant, apply styptic and bandage the wound. This was done through a submenu in the pause screen. Other ailments the player must treat Snake for include: leeches, broken bones, burns, cut, arrow/bolts/needles, stomach sickness, colds, and food/venom poisoning. Adding to the survival elements of the game, Snake Eater lives up to its name by requiring the player to scavenge food for Snake. Under the life bar there is stamina bar. If Snake does not eat any food the bar depletes, causing various effects. When the stamina bar is low, the player's ability to aim is severely handicapped, Snake's hands will shake in the first person aiming mode. Just like real life, Snake's stomach can also rumble, enemy soldiers can hear this, and will be alerted to Snake's presence.

Ever17: The Out of Infinity
Ever17: The Out of InfinityEver 17: The Out of Infinity is a visual novel video game developed by KID. It is the second entry in the Infinity series; it is preceded by Never 7: The End of Infinity, and followed by Remember 11: The Age of Infinity, 12Riven: The Psi-Climinal of Integral, and Code_18. From VNDB: "Ever17 is the tale of seven individuals who come to be trapped 153 feet within the underwater marine theme park, LeMU. During an apparently normal day at the park, a massive accident happens, placing almost half of the facility underwater. The path to the surface and the communication lines are cut off. In addition, LeMU is under constant assault by severe water pressure, limiting time to find a means of escape to 119 hours. Escape is not the only concern, however; many questions arise as to the legitimacy of the accident and whether or not those trapped there were brought there for a purpose."

Discworld II: Mortality Bytes!
Discworld II: Mortality Bytes!Discworld II: Mortality Bytes! is the second point-and-click adventure game based on Terry Pratchett's series of fantasy novels set on the mythical Discworld. The game was developed and produced in 1996 by Perfect Entertainment for the PC, and ported in 1997 for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. It was published by Psygnosis for the PC and PlayStation, and by Sega for the Saturn (only in Europe). In Discworld II the player controls Rincewind the "wizzard" (voiced by Eric Idle, as in the previous game) who has been burdened with the task of coercing Death out of his impromptu retirement and back into his regular duties. The plot borrows from a number of Discworld books, most notably Reaper Man, Moving Pictures and Lords and Ladies. It all begins in a quiet Ankh-Morpork street, where Rincewind and The Librarian inexplicably fail to die from a nearby cart-bomb explosion. The odd event is not shared by them alone however: occurrences of the newly dead re-awakening and disturbing the populace are being reported all over the city, prompting the Archchancellor of Unseen University to halt his usual activities of feasting and merrymaking, and to take charge of the situation. Much to Rincewind's despair, the entirety of this process involves appointing him to the task of finding Death and convincing him to resume his work.
