Keef the Thief: A Boy and His Lockpick

Keef the Thief: A Boy and His Lockpick (1989)

by Naughty Dog, Electronic Arts
Genres:Role-playing (RPG)
Themes:Action, Fantasy
Game modes:Single player
Story:Originally released for the Apple IIgs, Keef the Thief is a unique parody role-playing game about a young thief. The game and puzzles are quite absurd, but strangely addictive. Some inside scoop from developer Naughty Dog's website: "Keef was a classic sword and scorcery role-playing game. While we were making it, Andy entered sarcastic text as a place holder for what we believed would be the real text in the final release. EA liked the humor so much that they decided to make the entire game a comedy. The effect that this decision had on sales was no joke, however."Show more

It is strange to me how some Electronics Arts early games are available for purchase and others like this one are not. Since Naughty Dog pivoted to consoles after this and I never bought a console this is the only game of theirs I ever played. I remember the frontal nudity Easter egg. :)
Keef the Thief was one the first games I ever bought from a computer shop, it was in the bargain bin for $50 (quite a lot of money back then) because the code sheet to enter the game was missing, so I had to guess the answer to the copy protection every time I wanted to play, consequently once I had it running I would play for days so I didn't have to guess again. I was immediately hooked by the humour used in the game, which was allegedly just meant to be filler text to be replaced later, but whoever was in charge liked it so it stayed. I loved disarming (or not) the traps and the combat system whilst quite strange, was actually pretty good considering what other games were doing at the time. The amount of times I got endlessly lost in the map, till I memorised it. I particularly liked that once you won the game you were allowed to keep playing if you wanted. Not only do I think this should be on GOG, I think this game is dying for a remake or even a sequel, though I think the comedy aspect should not be left out, I think it made the game.
Those games also need your vote!

E.V.O. : Search for Eden
E.V.O. : Search for EdenThe storyline of E.V.O.: Search for Eden follows the same patterns as modern Evolution theories. The players first controls a prehistoric sea organism, and fights to gain evolution points with which he can improve his fish's body parts and upgrade his attack/defense abilities. The gameplay is not completely linear, which means that certain choices of paths and stages will affect the player's success. The game is composed of a series of stages, in which the sea organism slowly evolves into an amphibian, and later a land-only creature. The physical changes are fairly scientifically accurate which gives the game a semi-educational purpose as well.
