You could play the whole of the USA from the beginning of railroads to the modern era. Finding the best path for your tracks was very challenging in the early years.
I never played this game. My child memory was an ad: When you retire from Civilization I, after the demographics are shown, the ad for this game is present among others, and I always wish to play it.

This was such an amazingly innovative game. Along with Civilization, Railroad Tycoon made Sid Meier a household name in the gaming world. It was literally the original Tycoon game! I remember the excitement of seeing the whole country spread out like a blank canvas, and planning which cities to connect to start making money. And the fun of getting high-speed trains that would break records and get cool nicknames. It felt like later games in the series over complicated things and lost some of the magic of the original, which was relatively clean and simple.

As a kid I got into model railroading around the same time I discovered Railroad Tycoon, so for me I could work on railroading in multiple ways and have a fun experience. Also helped a bit with geography.
I found a bug where, if you lost enough money fast enough, your cash would roll around to a very large positive balance. Not sure if that was specific to my processor or not. I found it in one other game too--not Microprose or related in any way.

The original, and still my favorite version. Less restricted and less complicated than the modern remake, it held my interest long after the later, prettier version left me bored. Building the railroads across vast stretches of North America, or the smaller region of the UK or Europe, was easy to do, but challenging to do well. My kids learned numbers and set theory from helping me build trains when they were very young, but that's not the reason I would like to have this back - it was the locomotives more than anything, within a simple and enjoyable game that doesn't get bogged down in modern complications.

Black & White 2
Black & White 2In the game, the player takes the role of a god called from the void (nothingness) to help those who invoked them. However, the player is not an omnipotent style god, but rather a god who rises and falls with his believers and the player must help develop their nature according to their good or evil desires. The player also has a creature, their physical representation in the world, which takes the form of an anthropomorphic ape, lion, wolf, turtle, cow, or tiger. Its physical manifestation can grow to an immense size, and adopt a good or evil persona separate of the player's. They develop their character as the player rewards or punishes their actions. In addition to the god simulation and city-building elements introduced in the original Black & White, Black & White 2 also features elements of real-time strategy gameplay, with the addition of controllable warfare and fighting units.

Faselei!
Faselei!Faselei! is a Strategy game, developed by Sacnoth and published by SNK, which was released in Japan in 1999. Faselei! is one of the last titles to be released for the Neo Geo Pocket Color and even features digitised lyrics to the game's main theme. Heavily story driven, this strategy RPG takes place in a time when mechs known as TS are the weapon of choice for combat. Gameplay revolves around the battles and customising your TS between those battles. Battles are part turn based and part real-time. The player inputs their actions at the beginning of the turn. The amount of actions they can input is dependant on their type of TS. Once they have finished their selection everything is played out in real-time for the duration of the turn. This makes thinking about what your opponents and allies will do in advance essential before taking your turn.

Farland Story FX
Farland Story FXFarland Story is the first in the row of successful Japanese strategy RPG games. The main hero of the game is a knight named Arc, who is in love with the beautiful priestess Ferio. One day, when Arc and his best friend Randia are out of town, a hostile army under the command of a mysterious Black Knight invades the town and kidnaps Ferio. Thus begins Arc's quest to defeat the enemies and to rescue his beloved one from their clutches. Farland Story consists entirely of battles (save cut scenes and the ability to shop if you are near a town after a battle). During battles, you move Arc and his party over the terrain, and attack when there are enemies in range. The party consists of different classes - knights attack with swords, archers specialize in long-ranged combat, priestesses heal, etc. Every attack leads to a counter-attack, from the enemy's side as well as from yours. You gain experience points for every attack, and can level up in the middle of a battle.

Farland Story: Tenshi no Namida
Farland Story: Tenshi no NamidaFarland Story: Tenshi no Namida is a sequel to Farland Story II, released in mid 1994. The third in the row of Farland Story games, this title looks and plays very similarly to the first two games. You navigate your party over the world map in turn-based fashion. After you have assigned commands to your party members, it is the enemies' turn. You can attack physically when enemies are in range of your weapon, or cast spells - each character in your party belongs to a certain class and specializes in different type of combat. You gain experience points directly from hitting an enemy, even while counter-attacking, and can therefore level up in the middle of a battle.
