This is the missing link between Camelot's Shining series and Golden Sun. A first person grid based dungeon crawler RPG without the complexities of rolling stats and creating characters which are often found in other similar games. It is the best traditional turn based JRPG officially localized on the Sega Saturn, and probably the most under-appreciated high quality game in the genre from that console generation.
The dialog has personality, the tone is upbeat, music tracks you hear while exploring different settings and dungeons are memorable. They will stick with you for years. There are easter eggs in it that link it to Shining Force 3, and it has fan service like the original Shining in the Darkness' music being one of the tracks you hear late in the game.
It is one of those titles that most fans of the genre never had access or exposure to. It gets overshadowed by Shining Force 3, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and the Japan-only game releases. GOG should definitely go the extra mile on this one, and try to work with Sega on a pipeline for porting over Saturn games.
