I first played Star Ocean on the PS1 as a very young lad. The sheer amount of freedom you have to recruit you're party (Out of a cast of 13 characters, one of which wasn't in the original version, only 2 are mandatory. You get to pick 6 on top of those 2.) blew me away. Then recently Square Enix went "What if added more stuff to it and upped the visuals?". This is probably the most important game to my formative years as a gamer. It's what gave me my love of the JRPG genre, and It is the benchmark (Along with Suikoden 2.) I use to judge others of said genre. Regretfully they are almost always judged as wanting, as this is one of the best RPGs out there, with Suikoden 2 being one of the only games that surpasses it.
