Arthandas: Ai War is far from the refined, tactical combat I'm looking for. It seems very chaotic. I prefer to control a single ship.

I want something that plays similar to FTL. Maybe I'll give Nexus a go. Seems there aren't many interesting indie space titles. This seems interesting though the combat is more or less 'get in range, shoot and destroy':

I'm currently checking 10 min strategy.
Nexus is distilled awesome, but it's really more like King's Bounty IN SPAAAAAAACE than a pure strategy.

EDIT: I'm also going to be trying out Star Command from HMB 2 on my tablet this weekend, and it looks very FTL-ish.

tinyE: STARS! if you can find it.

I personally think it's the best of the best of the best.
I loved STARS!. One of my favorite things about it was it looks like you're working in Excel on most of the screens, so that people in my University computer lab wouldn't kick me out...

jamotide: How? Nexus looks like it has literally nothing in common with Kings Bounty.
It's a tactical combat RPG where you build a squad and romp around killing bad guys. Your character just happens to be a ship instead of a person.

jamotide: Oh ok, did not play Nexus, just Kings Bounty. But the Nexus description here on gog says nothing about RPG. It seems to be a mission based RTS. Are we talking about the same Nexus?
It's a mashup of RTS and RPG. Yeah, we're talking of the same Nexus; I've played it through a time or two since my brother loaned me the CD years ago (still have the CD--sorry, John!) and it's a linear RTS storyline, but there's a definite RPG element to leveling up your ship, adding new ships to the "party" and persistent experience points and benefits to not getting your ships killed.

Kind of like Myth:TFL, with much fewer units.

Actually, a lot like Myth:TFL with much fewer units, even down to the fact that friendly fire is not very friendly. Stupid dwarves.
