Grim Fandango (HD Remastered) completed
Thank you GOG for getting this game onto your website. I'm looking forward to playing this.
Many thanks GOG! =)
people are never happy pff
Reminder: here is the wishlist for the original - www.gog.com/wishlist/games/grim_fandango_original_version
Actually, it is a fully HD remaster, just because it keeps the original 4:3 aspect ratio doesn't mean it's not 1080p.
Hi Editor!
"Grim Fandango (HD Remastered)" is just a "remastered version" but NOT a HD version (new graphics, new native 1080p etc). Please rename the title to: "Grim Fandango (Remastered)". Thank you.
Again, here's the wishlist entry for the original: www.gog.com/wishlist/games/grim_fandango_original_version
Thank you GOG, I am super excited for the remastered version :D
My issue is the "it's highly unlikely (if not a complete 0%) that we'll ever publish Grim Fandango in its original" part.
GOG has offered alternative versions of games as extras before (eg. the less-compatible non-DOSBox version of Heroes of Might and Magic 2 Gold, what's known as "Outcast Classic" now that they've released Outcast 1.1, etc.) and I will consider Remastered as sufficient to satisfy my wishlist request only if it includes something ResidualVM-compatible as an extra.
If any GOG employees read this, please revoke my vote. (Or include the original Grim Fandango as an extra)
From what I've seen of the remastered Monkey Island games, whoever OKed the "remastered" art style should be fired for incompetence and there's no way to generate ScummVM-compatible data files from the retro mode. If Grim Fandango Remastered is anything along the same lines, I see no reason to buy it unless it drops down to some sub-$5 price.
(And, even then, probably only to take the moral high ground so I can then feel justified in downloading a ResidualVM-compatible torrent to set up with the mouse-interaction patch)
Here's a new wishlist entry for the ORIGINAL, guys, if that's important to you: www.gog.com/wishlist/games/grim_fandango_original_version
Ahoy! Vote for the POTCO/Pirates of the Caribbean Online project thingy poll thing as well ;) It's a former Disney game! :P
Like small children whining. If the game plays the same, has the same story and updates on visuals and controls, what's the problem? Look at Japanese game developers. How many times was Final Fantasy I redone and remastered to make it playable on newer platforms?
I never voted for the HD remastered version. It's unfortunate that GOG has decided to jump onto the "HD Remaster" bandwagon instead of fixing up old games so that people can experience them today.
Just as a reminder: it's not GOG fault if the original version is not released. Go tell it to Disney. And by the way, since you have the possibility to turn off the graphical enhancements, what's the problem?
I did not vote for this and I would not have voted for this. I will, however, probably buy it when it's 80% off.
I still hope, against all odds, that the original version I voted for will be released one day.
I dunno. They explain the situation pretty clearly above. It's not as though they merged votes and hoped nobody would notice. They posted their reasoning. I get that people voted for the original, but would you rather have a remastered edition or nothing? Some also voted for this remastered version. Based on internet searches and what they say above in the description it seems pretty darn unlikely they will ever get access to the original for release. It's not as though they had the original and chose not to release it just to spoil everybody's day, or as if they are spitefully giving us the remastered one instead as some kind of slap in the face. Someone was saying they will rate the remastered version 1 star just for not being the original, which I have to say seems incredibly petty and small minded. Why not try and live in the real world? This is the closest we are likely to get to the original, and it seems fine. We won't know until it's released. I'm pretty sure GOG would release the original if they had the option to. Time will show for sure but at this point the only thing better about the original is it's nostalgia value. Maybe the fact of it being a piece of "gaming history" to, but if that your argument you might as well go pay a bucket of money on ebay for the original CD's, because any kind of digital distribution for older games can never be 100 percent original when they didn't exist outside of CD's to begin with. People have this incredibly idealized view of GOG. GOG decided to sell something that became possible to sell. How dare they! I can still agree merging votes was not the right course of action for them and they could have handled it better. But that doesn't have to tip over into assuming they are sinking into some kind of big bad well of corruption.
Just as a reminder - anybody who want's to vote against gog manipulating the wishlist by fusing totally different wishlists together and arbitrarly changing descriptions regardless of what we think about this particular upcoming release can vote here:
www.gog.com/wishlist/site/gog_stop_manipulating_community_wishlist
Thanks for the data - so it is total remake indeed then.
They can't they say so right above: " it's highly unlikely (if not a complete 0%) that we'll ever publish Grim Fandango in its original. 2. We do not have any way to access Grim Fandango in its original to test, publish and sell/distribute on GOG"
To break it down for you, Disney owns the rights to the original game, not Tim, even if he made it. They LICENSED his new company (DoubleFine) to remaster (I vehemently refuse calling this a remake whatever anyone here thinks) said game for re-release. And since they expect to gain real money from this remaster, they have absolutely NO reason to ever go to the trouble of doing anything with the original isos/binaries and every reason NOT to.
You want it that badly, look for it used at e0bay, pay through your nose for it and play it using ResidualVM, that's how I played it last time. OR, if you're THAT much of a purist, dig out your old Pentium MMX, your windows 98 SE cd and your CRT 15" screen and your serial mouse (with the ball!!!) and keyboard.
Since gog marked both wishes as completed im expecting them to deliver the original game iso separately for download with Grim Fandango Remastered as it was done already with several games on gog. Maybe they shouldn't just say no since they were once a store called good old games that was established for delivering original/classic games drm-free and they could ask Mr. Schafer for an original iso for all the people who would want to play the game in its original glory. Otherweise thanks for the Remastered release gog but still not good what you did with the wishlist.
Grim Fandango Remastered is the name given by the Publisher, whether accurately called a Remaster or a Remake then becomes irrelevant and is just marketing propaganda (Bullshit).
The wish Linked below is about the principle of Not merging wihes in general and not specific to GF, though it was started due to this event. www.gog.com/wishlist/site/gog_stop_manipulating_community_wishlist
Supporting the principle for all games is better than posting in a wish labelled Complete.
Eli,
The new monkey island series would be the remade ones. Just adding some new musics (which is akin to modding), while using nearly identical game engine, story lines, voice actors, character models, backgrounds, game mechanics, would not be considered remake. If the new Grim Fandango game were to utilize new game engines such as Unreal, Havok or Unity 3D, utilize new voice actors, convert backgrounds to full 3D scenes, alter the story lines, completely new musics etc, then it would be considered remake. In fact, I recon new Grim Fandango not really "HD remaster" because I don't see any improvement in 2D static background scenes on screenshots.
This is bullcrap they merged the votes
WTF?!!! I NEVER voted for the "Remastered" version! No differences? Aha, and technically also no differences? I doubt you need a Duo Core and fucking 4 Gigs RAM for the Original!
GOG I deeply dislike the course you've taken in the last months!!!
SUBTRACT MY VOTE!
If you exclude the music entirely, then yes, there could be a "remastered" version of the game included with this remake. We don't yet know the extent of the artistic changes that will persist to make that determination. Otherwise, both versions included in this package are the very definition of remakes, as they each include an enormous amount of completely new music at the very least. A remaster includes nothing but original content sourced from the gold master itself - that's what the word means. Let's get THAT fact straight, folks.
Remaster (and its derivations, frequently found in the phrases digitally remastered or digital remastering) refers to quality enhancement of sound and/or picture to a previously existing recording. - Wikipedia
The term "remake" is generally used in reference to a movie which uses an earlier movie as the main source material, rather than in reference to a second, later movie based on the same source. For example, 2001's Ocean's Eleven is a remake of the Ocean's 11 - Wikipedia
This version definitely is a remastered version. Remake would be like Tim Burton's 2001 "Planet of the Apes", based on the original 1969 version.
So let's get this fact straight, folks.
And why the hell not the HD Remastered version? I'm sure some of you may want movies on VHS cassettes, but things have moved on. Most people want their movies on blu ray discs or USB drives, so if you really want the old version, get some from eBay. In fact, why don't you also get an old Pentium PC, if you want something really authentic?
Thank you GOG as Grim Fandango remains a favourite game for me and I'm looking forward to being able to download and play the game once more. I still have the original disk and an official strategy guide. Couldn't bear to let them go.....
Can anyone get more specific about the remastered controls? Does it have a point/click interface similar to Full Throttle and Monkey Island? This interface issue was the #1 issue preventing me from playing the original Grim Fandango.
It is not a remaster, it is the very definition of a remake. Even the supposed remastered version that may or may not be included with the remake has completely remade music, at the very least. At most, it too will also be a remake.
@Rixasha: It´s not a remake, it´s a remaster, like so many games in the recent past. (MDK II HD was a remaster. Baldurs Gate EE was a remaster. another World 20th Anniversary was a remaster!)
There are only few remakes right now. Oddworld NewAndTasty is a very good one. Tomb Raider Anniversary was praised a lot! MonkeyIsland was both.
Not to be confused with Reboots by the way, like ShadowWarrior 2013, Thief 2014 or TombRaider 2013!
I am happy with the HD Remastered version. It could be awesome. Time will tell. If you actually read what they did and who was involved it looks very promising and includes most original content as an option. But I am not happy with manipulation of the wishlist. But I think we should all be more happy about them releasing a version of this fine game then we should be upset about them merging the votes. After all, they do explain their reasoning above in the revised description, and it makes sense. People here really do hold GOG up to a way higher level of scrutiny and judgement then I've seen at any other store. It really shouldn't ruin your life to the point of the snarling anger in some of the comments in the forums right now. Buy it, or don't, and move on with your life.
Way to go GOG, great release!
FFS, I can't believe all these crybabies!!!
Sneaky? Manipulating? When this wish was first made there was no remaster to speak of, all there was was Grim Fandago, and if that were to come true, it would have most certainly been with the use of ResidualVM. That STILL isn't the original binary.
Does it matter? The game is the same, the story is the same, the experience the same (sans bugs and blocky graphics that is) so who gives a flying F?
If any of those babies bothered to look, they'd know that this "Remastered" version has very little differences from a properly polished up ResidualVM build as all they did was polish up the textures, increase the resolution, fix a few bugs that had escaped the original release and patches and of course add the new control schemes, score and commentaries. Not to mention that all of the above genuine improvements CAN BE TURNED OFF for a completely authentic experience!!!
So yeah, GoG delivered as asked, nothing more, nothing less and all those that disagree, well, just go out there and look for your next conspiracy theory and leave the rest of the sane world well alone.
The funniest thing that could happen would be if GOG managed to release the original version alongside the HD remake as bonus content. All those wasted votes from merging the entries...
I made a wishlist in the features section to remind gog not to manipulate the wishlist if it can't get a game for release here like in case of Grim Fandango: www.gog.com/wishlist/site/gog_stop_manipulating_community_wishlist
www.gog.com/wishlist/site/gog_stop_manipulating_community_wishlist
Agree with Rixasha - how can one trust the Wishlist system when GOG sneakily manipulates entries and makes votes count towards a wish that was not supported by the voters?
I vote for the Original but i´m happy that we can get the remastered version. Why we can be happy to be able to play GF?
GOG manipulating the wishlist? imagemacros.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/you_make_bunny_cry.jpg
46901 for remastered, huh?
LOL
Booooo... Bad GOG... No cake for you...
It's not that I'm not glad that Grim Fandango (HD Remastered) is coming here, and I might get it even.
But can't really say that I agree with manipulating the wishlist. I doubt that I voted for this, since I don't usually support remakes. I wish there was at least a way to withdraw a vote.
Not happy about wishlist manipulation. Grim Fandango Remastered definitely is not Grim Fandango Original. The same thing was done with Z ramake release.
I'm not happy about the way you manipulated the wishlist, GOG! :(
No idea why people are complaining. We asked for Grim Fandango to be put up on GOG, and here it is. And what does it matter if it's a Remastered version? You should be happy about that! And they clearly say that they merged the two wishlists because they'll never be able to add the original on here.
So all I can say is awesome work guys and thanks a lot! Can't wait to play it!
I didn't vote for this. I voted for the original version. Yet my vote registers here, in this new Frankenstein's monster of a request? Beyond unacceptable. This is like I voted for one candidate, and then some corrupt government official took my ballot and changed my vote to the opposing candidate. Maybe that's business-as-usual around GOG's HQ in Eastern Europe, but I'd appreciate it if corruption was kept to a minimum when it comes to the site itself.
Maybe there's no major point in having them separately. But having the original one as an extra to be able to run it in old computers. No need for testing nothing we'll figure it out. For me this is not broken, I'll buy it anyway because I'll play the remastered but it would be nice to have the option to play it in an old computer as well.
They would have to be pretty silly to don´t put it on here...
This will be remastered.. (well, the textures anyway.)
So no need for GoG to release it.
pleeeeease take my money!
