Do you have one? I do. It's a list of MMOs or online CCG and stuff that for one reason or another looks really interesting to me. Like Lord of the Rings Online or Elder Scrolls Legends or Guild Wars 2 etc. It might be the setting, or it might be something about the gameplay that's interesting... but not interesting enough to overcome my inherent dislike for online games and multiplayer and my pretty much uniformly "meh" experiences with such games in the past. I keep telling myself that one day, when my actual backlog is down to zero I'll give some of those a shot, but honestly I know it's not true. I'll either buy some more new single player games, or reinstall something old.

Right now I'm playing Heroes of Might & Magic 2 again instead of exploring The Shire in LotRO, because a choice between a single player turn based classic and an MMO is really no choice at all. I guess what I really want is someone to take those games and make single player versions of them I could actually enjoy :P

One of my clients gave me a Guild Wars 1 base game. I installed it, got stuck in the first "city" on a mission that required assistance from another player, and never got any further.

Been so long, I don't even recall the details.

I did try LoTR but didn't like the interface.

Been playing the star wars mmo for a couple of years now even though I've had an ongoing account issue since shortly after I started. I've only really stuck with it since I prefer the scifi games. The game for me has now developed into how much cash can I store in my bank via crafting.

Been looking for something different lately....
where I live, ALL OF THEM! :P
I've never been interested in mmorpgs, games need to have a clear ending for me, and the gameplay (from the little I've seen) doesn't appeal to me.
Played a bit of Starcraft 1 and 2 online once, but never was good at it...competitive games don't do much for me either, too stressful, and I lack the killer instinct for them.
So no, not really.
I've been really curious about Lord of the Rings Online myself. And Age of Conan as well due to the setting/style (incidentally the SP game Kemshi seems similar in style/vibe). Though I'm sure I would massively enjoy each if I got into it. It's mostly the inevitable time drain that keeps me away. Similar online games that may also count in this regard: Eve online, Runescape and WoW (again)
You're not missing anything by skipping LotRO. It's EXACTLY like every other MMO ever, with "collect 50 wolf pelts" type quests, and the world and setting, while Tolkien-flavoured at least in name, doesn't do anything in the least to pull you in.
Go play the old Interplay Lord of the Rings games if you want to explore the Shire.

I keep making that same mistake with MMOs: I get slightly interested by the flavour (LotRO, Elder Scrolls Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic), get hooked in with promises that "This time we broke from the MMO mold", "This isn't your usual MMO game!" etc., and then figure "You know, MMO is one significant part that has always been missing from my experience of gaming culture, lets try it out!".
I get disappointed EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I've been playing LOTRO since beta. I kicked the MMO habit many years ago. I do not play any games with a subscription model.

LOTRO client is pretty old and rough. Servers can have spotty performance now and then. It is almost a single player game at this point unless higher levels.

I remember those (vaguely), and I really don't see myself going back to them. I guess my best chance of taking a walk around the Middle-Earth is the Lego LotR coming to GOG, which I guess it eventually will.

Yeah, there's so many license that got wasted on MMOs when they could have been great real RPGs instead it's just sad.

Is Age of Conan even still around? I thougth that one's dead.

I got ESO in the sale recently. Haven't played it yet. Pretty much the exploration is the only thing that draws me because these games fucking suck from a gameplay standpoint and what they do with the time you're playing them with. I never really played MMOs. I don't like them for a lot of the same reasons you talked about. I was playing BDO but now I'm back to my usual mix lately of fighting games and co-op shooters.

Agreed in general, but there are some parts from that world that stand out and really convey the atmosphere. The Old Forest was wonderfully realized and utterly bewitching to try and find your way through. And Moria was just grandiose and epic and gorgeous, and exactly how it should be. And I kinda enjoyed Rohan as well, though there it was the music more than anything else that made it work.

I long since kicked the habit, but I don't regret having played LotRO at all. It was worth the time despite all the cookie-cutter quests and grind.

Might be I can't say I know much about it. Last I heard, years ago, it went partly/completely F2P. There is a new Conan game on steam, but I don't anything about it. I like the whole sword and sorcery genre and overall wish there were more of it. I'm still pissed that Korgoth of Barbaria wasn't picked up.

As far as MMOs go ESO is pretty decent. There are several massive zones that are fun to explore and combat is exciting overall. The only thing that really betrays it as an mmo is the trivial difficulty of 99% of the quests.

At first I thought I have no such games but thinking a bit longer, I have been slightly tempted to try out EVE Online now and then but I would hate how you have to live in there with no time for anything else.
I played Ultima Online from the first year of release, for several years before I eventually quit. After that, I just wasn't interested enough in any other MMOs.

Nothing that followed was sufficiently appealing enough for me to invest the time, plus the whole 'free-to-play' but with micro-transactions bollocks with anything even remotely interesting in recent years...

Nahh... I'll stick to single-player games, thanks.

I can't say I didn't enjoy Korgoth, but I don't know if I'd stick around for a whole series. I'd be more interested in Tartakovsky doing a serious Conan animated series.

The classic Conan-esque sword & sorcery sub-genre is a weird thing - it seems dirt simple, and yet it also seems very hard to get right and not too cheesy or a parody. I mean, when Conan the Destroyer narrowly beats out the Deathstalker for a spot on the Top 5 movies list you know the genre is trouble.

Anyway, I agree, Conan's world is defiantely another one I'd love to explore in a video game. But Age of Conan if a dead or dying MMO, and Exiles seems to focused on survival for my liking (I really hate survival games).
I can't say I do. For some reason the only online game I've ever felt real interest to are the Team Fotress games. I started originally with Quake Team Fortress, later MegaTF (which is Quake TF with extra features), then Team Fortress Classic, and now Team Fortress 2.

For online FPS games, I have tried Counterstrike, Crysis 3 (when its multiplayer was free for awhile) and some others, but for some reason they never felt interesting enough, they felt kinda pointless. I think the reason I like Team,Fortress games is because you can play it in so many different ways with the different classes (whereas e.g. Counterstrike felt just shoot shoot shoot and jump around). I think I also tried TitanFall or something like that (probably on Origin) when it was free for some time, but it didn't grab me either.

I recall also trying Starcraft and Diablo (1 or 2, not fully sure) online, but they just felt boring, and it was clear to me I wouldn't survive long in Starcraft multiplayer. I play RTS only in single-player campaigns, not interested even in single-player skirmish (which to me is like playing an online FPS game with bots, ie. pointless).

At some point I was thinking of trying out World of Warcraft as I had two friends who were addicted to it, but I never did because I didn't like the idea of having to pay both for the game first, and then some kind of monthly fee. Plus, I was afraid it might become too addicting, having those two friends in mind.

I consider single-player and online multiplayer two completely different beasts, which scratch different gaming itches in me.

Single-player:
- is more about exploring the game world, story, game music, the overall feeling... but yes also there usually needs to be some kind of challenge.
- I might be playing several single-player games side by side.

Online multiplayer (at least the kind of games I play, FPS):
- Competitive in nature, to me it is like going to play football with friends, all I want is to beat the other team.
- One multiplayer game at a time is enough. I don't see the point of trying to play several different online games side by side, especially since you usually need to invest quite a bit of your time and dedication to one game alone to become any good at it.
- More repetitive in nature. In single-player games I want to explore new areas etc., in online multiplayer (FPS) games I want to keep playing the same maps over and over again, learning them like the back of my hand and knowing all the ins and outs in the map. Whenever I try a new multiplayer map, it always feels a bit overwhelming and confusing, there's not really much time to try to learn the map while you are trying to help your team.
