The game is crashing after the opening cinematic where an evil looking knight kills another knight. I am using Windows 7, and I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, running it as administrator, running it in Windows XP compatibility mode, and I have tried launching it both from the Galaxy client and directly from the application. The only thing that has gotten any change is that the launcher doesn't show up when I use Galaxy, it just launches the game. I would really appreciate any assistance in getting the game to run correctly

Your graphics driver is up-to-date?

Was one edition back, updated it, same problem
Check your antivirus (disable it temporarily) isn't interfering. It's a common cause of programs, particularly games, crashing or failing to start.
Btw, we are talking about BG1, not BG1 EE? Just to be sure... If so, fire up the BG-Config-Program, and play a bit with the graphic settings.

Last option (die hard fans, dont tar and feather me :p): If you have bought BG1 here on GoG and own the BG1 EE therefore, try to install the BG1 EE (preferrably ver1.3 from Galaxy). It runs on modern systems without problems.

So does the classic.
I believe it is just BG1, not the BG1 EE. It's just labeled "Baldur's Gate: The Original Saga" I bought it some time ago and haven't had time to get to it yet.

I have tried disabling antivirus, no effect. It still crashes after the opening cinematic. I've also opened up the what I think is the config but didn't see any graphics options, just game speed, region, and 3 pages of keybindings.

Where is you game installed? "C drive" is not sufficient. Need to know the exact path.

It's at C:/Program Files (x86)/Games/GalaxyClient/Games/Baldurs Gate

There's a strong possibility that your installation path is too long for such an old game. Also, games should never be installed to 'Program Files' / 'Program Files (x86)', since Windows forbids any alteration (saving of config files etc.) to the folder where the game expects to find it. Best course of action for you is to not use Galaxy and install BG to somewhere like C:\Games\Baldur's Gate\ . Keep it simple.
That did the trick, thank you very much. Never realized that the location a game was saved could screw with it's performance before
Glad the issue was resolved. Regarding the graphic settings - my mistake. There are none in BG1 classic, sorry.
