I've finished this game several times and I'm giving it one more go.

In Ulgoth's beard you can get 3 dwarven wardstones. One for paying off the guy's tab at the inn, and another from the bankrupt merchant. One of the wardstones is fake.

Does anyone know what the good ones are used for? I always carried them around and assumed they were used somewhere in Durlag's Tower. However I would appreciate if anyone can give a definitive answer as to what they do.

Thanks.

They open various doors automatically, which would otherwise be unopenable. Some are required to progress (and you find those wardstones within the dungeon) while others (including the ones you buy) provide shortcuts bypassing dangerous things like trap-corridors.

Absolutely none of the wardstones in Ulgoth's Beard are required; they are all red herrings. You can find everything you need at Durlag's Tower. Do not waste your hard earned cash.

I know about those wardstones.

I'm asking specifically about the 2 you get in Ulgoth's Beard from Galkin at the bar and from the merchant (Delsvsomething).

In Ulgoth's Beard ALL wardstones, labeled forgery or not, are scams. Ignore them.

As Hickory said, they're not required. The real ones are dupes of ones you can find in the tower. No need to buy them.

Then again, you'll probably have more money than you'll ever need by that point in the game, so you might as well buy them if it suits your rping.

Not if you're playing vanilla. There is never enough money in vanilla. But I do agree about the RP'ing. If it suits your game to get scammed, then absolutely... buy them.
Thanks.

I'm buying them anyway for RPing reasons. Was just curious if they do anything.
What about the wardstone you get from Ike then? Do you need it for anything?

I vaguely remember that it was needed in order to enter the secret door in the basement, but in my current game I can enter level 1 dungeon without Ike's stone.

No. That is false. You do not need a wardstone from anybody. The entry into the lower levels is a simple secret door. All of the essential wardstones are found from there on in.
OK thanks.
