The original baldurs gates are on sale and I don't see if the multiplayer option is listed under the description but have read different accounts of people playing the game with their friends. Is it possible to play the original Baldurs gate games online?

Yes, but be aware that it can be troublesome to set up. Most people find that setting it up in windowed mode (press ALT+ENTER) negates most problems, and you can go back to full screen once set up properly.

Gameranger works pretty well with BG. It's an auxiliary program for playing older games online.

I played through entire BG1 with a friend over Gameranger without any problems. As long as the game is windowed when the game session is started, it should be okay. It can be set to fullscreen again when you are in-game. We have had some problems in BG2 (it crashes occasionally), but it is playable.
