While playing BG2, you can meet other adventurers who can join your party (if it's at max size, one party member will have to leave). Most of these seem to have their own side-quest attached.

I'm presuming that performing this side-quest and getting the requisite XP will balance out the fact that by periodically bringing new people into my party, I'm spreading out other XP a bit more?

Continually swapping out your party members will not balance out in the end. You will end up with sub-par members at end game. Pick a party and stick with it as much as you can -- there's plenty of XP elsewhere.
Thanks; I had suspected as much. Since i doubt I'll ever get time to replay BG2 and want to see as much of the story as possibly, I'm wondering if it's possible _if_ I only swap in new character in order to do their side-quest and that alone (once done, then swapping back in my original party). Decisions decisions...

There's nothing wrong with swapping out party members to do other character's quests, and it is perfectly do'able. My point, really, was that if you want the optimum party (XP-wise), swapping out is not ideal. If all you want to do is see all there is to see, then I suggest you go ahead and complete all of the quests you can. It's your game... go for it.
