Hi

Newish to here (and an infrequent Steam gamer), wanting to know if I buy expansion content here for a game I have on Steam will I be able to add it and will the game then see and play with it ?
I asked on Steam and have got two different answers so far - No, and only if it has a key that can be added. The second answer brings its own fun as, if true, how will I know if the content I buy here will have a key or a key that Steam recognises ?
And, in answer to possible responses, I'm not that big a gamer that I would bother re-buying games from here or elsewhere.

Cheers

You need to own the base game in order to buy the DLC here on GOG, a message pops up letting you know if you have DLC but not the base game.

Also no games here offer Steam keys, all games here are DRM free and do not need a client to run.

You might try to contact the game's editor providing proof that you purchased the DLC on GOG, and ask if they would kindly offer a steam key for it. No guarantee it will work.

None of the GOG games provides a Steam key. And furthermore, it should be impossible for you to even buy a DLC here if you don't already own the base game on GOG.
Thanks all for the fast replies, especially about having to own the GOG base game before you can even buy additional content for the game - that is not intuitive from looking around here.
So GOG games are proprietary in a sense (no mix and matching with other game components sourced elsewhere) too ?
Good to understand all the requirements and gotchas before spending cash.

There is no real mixing or matching on any store. Each store has its own installer tied to whichever drm mechanism or client they use. The dlc needs to plug into that environment. Now theoretically if you could buy the dlc from store, extract the files, then you could copy these into the relevant locations and do the updates. However that’s not a great way to do it. Hence why most will allow you to buy only for that platform. All games are proprietary and bound by the terms and conditions. It’s was often the case with dvd games as well, that you need to up version, or change version of your base game to use the dlc.
So yes, best to buy things in one place.

Not really a gotcha as most online client based stores act the same way as they want you to spend your money in one spot. The plus with GOG is again being DRM free so you can just get the offline installers and then install them as many times as you want where ever you want without having to worry about Internet or needing to log in to an online server.

As mentioned new to the site (even though old in years) and did not realise GOG was a client-based game provider like Steam. All understood now, thanks to all.

Over the years GOG has gone 180 with many of their initial promises, like worldwide pricing, games sold as complete editions, etc.

But the one thing that has always been GOG's main point, and still is, is that you don't need a client, it is not client-based, you have access to DRM-free downloads, although as unfortunate as it is, they are nowadays offered only as an "alternative" to GOG's own client software.

I have never even installed GOG client, all purchasing and downloading is possible without it. That doesn't mean that everything would be compatible with games bought from other stores, most likely it isn't, although in some cases you could be able to combine DLC from GOG with a base game from another store.

The problem is, you can't buy a DLC without base game owned, as already explained, and you can't do that anywhere else either, but the client, or lack of, has nothing to do with it. Even back in the day of CD-ROMs expansion discs from other countries were with high likelihood incompatible with game CDs from a different country.
I also don't have the client and everything is working well. Downloads from the site might have only the problem with the multiplayer parts, but it is understandable as the game has to make unique id to tell the players apart.
That's why Galaxy(GOG's client) was created.
Also it is the similar case with DLC. Typical DLC won't have the files of the base game, but it will have to correspond with them. As the base game is different for every store it won't work.
Any time this question is asked I can't help myself from not substituting Steam and GOG with two different console makers as while it is immediately clear to anyone how absurd that would be, the situation really isn't much better between different digital stores for PC games either once you start to think all the pros and cons for the developers and the digital stores instead of only focusing on how great it would be for you as the customer to be able to buy the expansions from a competing store.
Well...

Wow, you've really shone a whole new light on the topic. We'll have to re-evaluate the entire issue.

Exactly my problem, I were on mobile phone. And at home I found out, that base game is a steam version. Well I guess I have bad luck. Money out and no use.
