adaliabooks: Never played that one, but I'd say yes.
They're turn based tactical RPGs (pretty much my favourite genre so I am a little biased) and very good examples of the genre.

And as I see you have expressed a preference for puzzle games; I'd definitely recommend SpaceChem. You can usually pick it up for under £1 (or a $1 I presume) when there's a big sale on and it's an excellent puzzle game.
I don't play many shooters / FPSs any more, but I can certainly recommend Unreal Tournament and Jedi Knight 2.

adaliabooks: Jedi Knight 2 is great, there are 3 other games in the series (2 before and 1 after) but I haven't played them so can't personally recommend them. I hear the earlier ones are good, but a bit dated these days. Jedi Academy (the last in the series) is also meant to be very good, unfortunately I haven't managed to beat JK2 yet to move on to playing it due to my rusty FPS skills...

Game recommandation would depend on what kind of games you like. So I will take my time to tell you my favorite games and why I like them so you can decide.

IF you love RPGs. (you can click the names to go to game page)

Baldur's Gate is probably best RPG ever made. It runs on infinity engine with Dungeons and Dragons 2.5 rules. IT may be hard to learn and even harder to master but it has the best story I have seen in any game. (I havent played Planescape Torment yet.) You should buy BG1 and BG2 together and use theEnhanced edition versions of these games which doesnt require any modding but twice expansive. Your choice.

Neverwinter Nights is an awesome game with D&D 3.0 rules which is a lot easier to learn than D&D 2.5 rules. I just finished NWN and all of its expansions and I had a blast. Medium level story with awesome gameplay. Its made by same company who did Baldur's Gate which is Bioware who is known for making Mass Effect and Dragon Age games (which I am desperatly hoping will come to GOG one day. )

This game is much more easier than Baldur's Gate but like any other Bioware game it has an amazing story. This is my favorite RPG of all time and I dont think you will be disappointed. My advice, dont watch any letsplays and dont read any reviews about this game before completing it as it may ruin the fun you will get. ;) You will thank me later.

STRATEGY

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a must for any strategy game lover no matter where you come from. You have towns which you develop and fight creatures and other players with your heroes and the creatures you command. Its an awesome experience and you will love it.

Master Of Orion They are selling MOO1 and MOO2 together so you cant go wrong with this. Some people think MOO2 is the best game ever made and some think (including me) MOO1 is the best game ever made. They both run on Dosbox and graphics may be outdated but the fun never gets old. You start with one planet on the galaxy and develop your technology, design your ships and invade other planets. If I say I finished MOO a thousand times I wouldnt probably be far away from the truth.

First Person SHOOTER

Clive Barker's Undying is the best FPS I have ever played. Very dark and scary atmosphere where you need to solve the story of a cursed family. I havent played the GOG version already I own it but i am sure it works.

Well I own 300 games but these are the ones I would start with. Have fun and feel free to ask any questions you might have.

sunshinecorp: It became so much of a joke that on the second insomnia sale, even GOG itself trolled the game, and us, with a fake appearance. I believe it was 10000 copies or more, but it disappeared in a split second, just enough to give some people heart attacks.

InfraSuperman: For old-school shooters, you can't really go wrong with Doom or Blood. The latter is an incredibly challenging game, though.

When it comes to more modern shooters, Unreal Gold and F.E.A.R. are really good.

Primarily horror-based games are System Shock 2 (personally, I don't really like it all that much and think System Shock 1 is vastly superior, but most people tend to prefer 2); Clive Barker's Undying; I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream (an adventure game, more unsettling than outright scary).

Realms of the Haunting is also a good game that combines horror, shooting and point & click adventure-style puzzles into a rather strange mix. Not necessarily a "must play" title, though.

Keep in mind that all or most of the above games go on sale rather frequently.

Also, take a look at the free games. Really good ones in there. I recommend Beneath a Steel Sky, Tyrian 2000 and Ultima: Worlds of Adventure 2 - Martian Dreams.
