NoNoWriMo is how I got started. I wrote about 1/3ish of a book called The Angel Cab Company. It's about a man in a dead-end job whose inheritance from an uncle changes him into the driver of The Angel Cab Company -- a simple taxi that takes hitchhikers and homeless people to where they need to go. His fares all have stories that relate and entangle. A good time was had by all.

When I was done, I could tell that it wasn't ready in my head to be ready for prime-time. But I gained a lot of confidence in my writing.

I highly recommend NoNoWriMo to everyone who can muster up the time. I had no kids at the time and probably would not be able to participate in a meaningful way at this point in my life. But if you can and want to, go for it!

That's height of creativity. Writers had to think characters, situations, location, relations, backstories, endings and what not for a story.
Reading is one thing but writing is one serious job even when you are writing a funny story.
Do they have copyright? Because I want to read some of your work. Do we have to buy your novel or pay for it? Let's see if I come up with some idea before November and before that clean up my real life mess then I will sure participate else I will do it next year.

Right now I only have some old fanfiction up on the net that I'd rather not have associated with me anymore. :P And one more recent piece, if you're into Mass Effect? My own fiction is not up on the internet at the moment. I do plan to self-publish it soon-ish, but the two books I'm thinking of doing it for still need a bit of editing and a cover.

I'd love to, but I can't do 1600 words of creative writing in a day. I already translate 4000 words of bullshit a day.

Translation work can be really mind-numbing. I really hate it at times too. I'm trying to combine NaNo with essays and my master's dissertation, so we'll see how it turns out.

I don't think I'll be participating this year, but I know a couple who are doing Nanowrimo.
Having done so before, I wish you all the best of luck. It's hard to crunch those words on the daily.

90% of my work is in finance, IT and engineering (and usually combinations of two of them - I specialise in financial IT anyway), so it's doubly mind-numbing for me. I do game localisation as well, although because the German gaming industry is all but dead now, there's very little on that front. I used to work fairly regularly with an Austrian games company, but they ended up going bankrupt.

Game localisation is one of the most fun types of translation, as long as you have a certain amount of creative freedom and the ability to bounce ideas off the scriptwriter. More often than not, though, you'll just be lumped with an Excel file containing contextless strings.

Auch, that sounds terrible. I though my stamp collector's magazines were boring but this is ten times worse. Hearing this makes me really glad translation is just a job I do on the side.

I can imagine! I've never done anything like that but it should be better at least than finance ...

Why do you crap on J.K. Rowling so much? Despite of what you think, she is one of the best writers of our decade and her works will be remembered for a long time, like J.R.R. Tolkien's. Whether you like her or not, don't diss authors because of your personal dislike, especially when you act as if she was one of the worst writers ever - just go and take any random book from a bookshop, esp. from the same genre and you'll see how great her writing is.

Set aside your dislike and show some respect, this isn't somebody whose work is often contested or disliked. Many famous authors (whom you probably like, unless you dislike most of significant, contemporary fiction writers) enjoy and value her work.

Sounds interesting but i can barely continue my own stories. Tho its a shame Turkey only have 17 writers.
