When I posted my entry for the new GOG contest, I saw a post from another user right above mine:

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_mysterious_mystery_box_contest_is_here_0cb4e/post15

That post reminded me of a game I once hoped would get released: "Batman: Gotham by Gaslight"

Teaser trailer (fan made): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7YJfJePb08
Original prototype footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65IsSRMi4i0

Deep down, I still hope to see a game featuring Batman in an Victorian setting.
Either in Gotham, or in London.

Hey - he even may partner up with Sherlock and/or Arsene to get "Jack the Knife", which - in return - could partner up with a Victorian "Jokester", and/or "Ra's al Ghul".

What about you?
Are there any games that you were excitedly hoping for, before they got canned?

Or maybe some game that nobody ever brought up as a possible release, but that you simply wish would come to pass?

Whilst Prey (2017) is a good System Shock-ish game in its own right, I'd have loved to have had a proper Prey 2 sequel to Prey (2006)
Agent from Rockstar Games, it has to be a stealth action set during the Cold War in the late 1970s. I've been waiting it since announce many years ago for PS3. Thanks for getting me remember this.

Wow, looks like there is even less material around for this, than for the Batman game...being an agent in the 70s sounds cool, though.

I never played "Prey" (I didn't like what I saw in the gameplay videos at the time of release).
But your comment reminded me of another game I'm waiting for (not canceled - so far (fingers crossed)):
the new System Shock.

Long since wishlisted, of course.

Ah ... to those forgotten. A toast!

I wanted to play Michel Ancel's 2008 announced true successor to "Beyond Good & Evil", before Ubisoft shat its corporate crap on it - and before the main voice actress died on us.

A complete reboot and reimagining of Tom Hall's 2001 masterpiece "Anachronox" that adds the second half. The license is with SquareEnix now, so just forget about that.

Ragnar Tørnquist's true successor to The Longest Journey, called "The Longest Journey Home" in the 2013 Kickstarter for Dreamfall Chapters, promised pure 2D graphics and point and click adventure gameplay.

The King's Quest license went to Telltale in 2010 and they wanted to make a game, but never did because their Walking Dead game was so darn successful. They lost the license way before they could use it.

LucasArts canceled Sam & Max: Freelance Police in 2004. I would have wanted to play that one so badly, along with Indiana Jones: Spear of Destiny (minus the Hitler resuscitation bollocks).

I haven't given up hope for a successor to Technobabylon, but the one man development army behind it doesn't seem to be all that healthy these days.

The Lost Vikings always felt to be trilogy worthy. But Blizzard would rather make the quadrillonth Diablo.

The third part of Knights of the Old Republic would have been something I would have liked to see. But I guess they won't even release the remake of the first part.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 ended on an unfair cliffhanger back in 2014, and it's been so long that I don't really remember what the cliffhanger was. But a third part would be welcome.

Speaking of third parts, the Grimrock series went out with an incredible bang with part two. I'd be up for a third one.

The Chuck Tingle game was set up to be a wonderfully wicked FMV driven crazy queer thing back in 2016, and although the movie sequences were shot, the game was never put together.

Jack Houston and the Necronauts' Kickstarter claimed to be able to release in December 2013. The game never released.

Well, that's quite a list.
Lot's of good suggestions here. The one that I'd add is the cancelled Star Trek: First Contact game, which would have been another in the Microprose Star Trek series. A Final Unity and Generations were great games (despite being licenced in the days when this meant games were usually terrible); and First Contact had a good premise.
Ooh, how could I forget: "Shadow of the Eternals" a successor to "Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem".

I absolutely loved ED: SR and got so excited when they announced this.
But then...sigh.

I really wish that StarCraft: Ghost game had not been canceled, and had been actually released. I think experiencing the StarCraft universe in that way would have been cool. Plus, what little footage there is looks promising.

Babylon 5: Into the Fire because we never got an official game in that universe.

Advent Rising 2 - it ended on a cliffhanger.

Nexus 2 - a sequel(?) to Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.

Wow I didn't know about these games. Now I miss them, too.

Yeah I seem to remember now... another one to regret.
I always hoped for a sequel to Halfway. Still not impossible that there will be one in the future, but after eight years I really doubt it.
Anyone remember Dead Rush? It was supposed to come out for the GameCube as well, and because the only GTA-style game on GC at the time was True Crime, I was excited and then it was cancelled.

There was also a Dawn of the Dead first person shooter for PC. I remember images floating around where there was a pistol with brass knuckles and a shotgun with an axe for a stock. But the images really only looked like test gameplay anyway, so it was probably cancelled for good reason unlike Land of the Dead, which was released.

Also, obligatory Van Buren reference.
