I started to put this in the Elder Scrolls forum, but then realized I have noticed the problem on a couple of other games as well, and so I'll just try here. Sorry if that's wrong.

I'm playing Arena (TES Chapter 1). 1994 Dos game. On a relatively new, fast, gaming laptop. And my framerates are so choppy I'm actually getting ill. And I've never, EVER, experienced the well known possible side effect of nausea while playing a video (nor have I ever experienced the other well known side effect of seizures).

So I'm assuming I need to do something in DOSBox? Could someone recommend where to start? I noticed two that seemed like good starts, one was Graphic Mode on Basic settings (the thing where you picked Surface, OpenGl, etc). And the other was something about Scaling Engine under Advanced Settings.

Oh, and miracle of all miracles I actually remembered to mark this as a question!!! I don't care about rep so almost always forget to do that, but I understand some do care so it's nice if I remember to mark it so I can give someone 5 points (or whatever the number of points is you get)

You could try this? My laptop had some issues with this a while back and this solved it for me.

Just to add to what darthspudius linked, you might try CTRL-F12 to raise cycles/speed (ctrl-f11 to lower)

Heh, I started to reply that my DOSBox configuration thing that comes up when you click on DOSBOX Configuration didn't have any of those choices to change, but then I noticed in the Arena folder a DOSBox config file, so I'm guessing that's where to make these changes.

I'll fiddle in there and see what happens.

THANKS!

No problem :)
Well, I must be doing something wrong, because I'm not noticing any difference whatsoever no matter what figure I use. Gonna have to read that whole wiki article I guess, maybe I'm putting the changes in the wrong place? I dunno, there are two DOSBox conf files in the Arena folder, one titled DOSBox_Arena and the other titled DOSBox_Arena_Single, so maybe that's the issue???

Too bad these adjustments weren't part of that nice and easy little window that comes up when you click on the application DOSBox configuration, then I might have at least had a chance of doing it right. lol
Okay, yeah I was using the wrong file. That worked.... I guess. LOL, the frame rate is much better, but boy the people "walking" around in the city now look like you're watching one of those old black and white silent films from the 1920's and they're moving so fast. Guess it speeded up everything. LOL Oh well, rather watch all the city folks do their "power walks" and not be sick than watch them walk normally and keep getting sick.

ADDED: Oh boy, just thought though, if that sped everything up, what the heck is combat going to be like now? I don't remember having this problem the last time I played it, maybe the gog version being a little different is causing it?

The game is slow by design I think. A lot of people forget that the games of the past were designed around the hardware of the past, so some of them are just supposed to be slow and 'choppy'.
