not the mod: just the standard 1 and 2 patches. specifically, TOEE_PATCH1_ENU and TOEE_USA_ANY-PATCH2 .

thanks,

More info needed, specifically:

Are you trying to install them on your retail (CD) version of a game, or the GOG version. If the GOG version... Don't. Just... don't! I said no! Don't do it! Please, for the love of God, no!!! Read my lips: N.O. as in "nope".

If the retail version: where did you obtain those patches? What country version is your TOEE retail?

The GOG version already contains the official patches (and some older community fixes too, apparently). See the "TEMPLE OF ELEMENTAL EVIL PATCH LEVELS" section of this post from the Circle of 8 forums for info about which release of the game contains what patches.

GOG version. i take it you've had less than sanguine experiences with the standard patches

im surprised to hear you say that, hunch. the version im playing wouldn't even rate as a beta release; that many bugs. stupid thing will crash if i merely boot it up and leave it at the intro screen for too long. which is a real waste, 'cos it's the finest exposition of the pen & paper game i've ever played, if we're talking dungeon hacks.

From what I've read, even most die-hard fans of the game would recommend against playing the unmodded version. Besides that Circle of Eight modpack that that site I linked is devoted to (by far the most popular and recommended mod for the game), there's also a newer project called Temple+, which aims to fix some of the longstanding bugs that even Co8 couldn't, as well as adding even more content (and it's supposed to be compatible with Co8).
Mind you, I've not tried either of them, as I got bored with Temple before I had even fully explored the first town, but lots of people swear by both of those. :)

The standard patches are meant for the original retail (CD) versions of the game, not the GOG rerelease version. Hence I am not surprised at all the patches don't recognize your GOG installation of the game (that's what the error basically says, it doesn't find the game (retail) installation it is looking for, it doesn't recognize the GOG version).

GOG's version comes with all three official Atari patches pre-installed. You can't apply them a second time. If you like you can directly install The-Circle-Of-Eight mod, which I can truly recommend. It polishes the game to what it should have been from the get go. The release of ToEE was pretty rushed and it shows in the vanilla version.

The installation instructions in the Circle of Eight forum give you also some background info about official patches:

yeah the town's a horror, but i tell u what, if you're looking for standard hacks, it's got a bunch of fine small unit tactics. lot of rilly good environments and endless opportunity for improvisation. thanks

yeah i tried the co8 patch, couldnt install it. ill give the guys there the word up and see wot they say. was a bit of a purist at first, thought, "bunch of luxury mods for monty hauls". but im changing my mind. i must say those hommlet quests drove me slightly mad: bit of modification for the young in the head would go well. cheers man

Yeah the solution was not to try to install the retail CD version patches over the GOG version, as they are incompatible.

Or were you talking about the eight circles something something patch?
