I couldn't imagine playing any other version of this game than the Amiga one on either a Zipstick or Competition Pro (joysticks).
Such a great game.

OldFatGuy: I assume by "successful" you must be talking about how it sold as opposed to it worked. I played with gamepads since the 1980's on consoles and since the EARLY 1990's on PC's. (Joysticks on PC's since the 80's too, but my first gamepad... a la the NES type... was about 1992 or 3. And it worked perfectly fine and in fact had built in support in many games (the first Redneck Rampage comes to mind).

So yes... gamepads for DOS games were a thing well before SWOS.
Yes they existed, but were not as widespread that most games would have support for them, at least during the MS-DOS times. Games were usually designed to be played with a mouse, keyboard and/or an analog flightstick.

I had e.g. the Gravis Gamepad that I mentioned before:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravis_PC_GamePad

In the end though, I used it very little, it didn't seem to offer much of any benefit in games. Maybe in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, as some of the obscure combinations were hard to perform with arrow keys (like doing 720 degree swirls etc.). I have no idea why I would have wanted to use with FPS games like Redneck Rampage, such games were designed to be played with keyboard and mouse, not a digital gamepad.

Most games, where the gamepad may have been useful, were still really designed to be played with a keyboard.

moobot83: i just hope GOG recognises this issue
avatar
moobot83: not sure but it needs to be sorted out
That's beyond GOG's remit.
avatar
moobot83: they seem to be able to change features in other games and SWOS was never played with a keyboard cos it was on consoles
This isn't the console version.

Plain wrong!
It saw release on the Amiga (as has been already mentioned by timppu.

Apart from that:

KEYBOARD - You should use the arrow keys to move the players and
the return key (for right handed people) or the left shift key
(for left handed people). In this guide, I refer to the return
key as the "selection" key.

To slide tackle, press the selection key when you dont have
possesion of the ball.

To pass, tap the selection key once and your player will pass
to the closest player in the direction he is facing.

To shoot, press the selection key firmly and your player will
shoot in the direction he is facing.

CONTROLLER/JOYSTICK - Unfortuantly, despite my god like powers,
I cant even start to guess what your controller looks like.
If it has one button, use it in the same way you would use a
keyboard. If you have 2 buttons, assign 1 to shoot and the other
to pass and slide tackle. If you have 3 buttons or more, assign
one button to each action.

OTHER IN GAME CONTROLS - To bring up the subsitutes bench, press
Page Up if you are shooting up, and Page Down if you are shooting
down.
