For a companion-companion, this one <-- is great. For a video game companion, pretty crappy. "Annie - kill!" /Annie flops over on her back, wags her tail furiously, and waits for belly rubs.

Probably why you don't see many Boxer / Staffy mixes in games. Though she should give a Charisma bonus, to help with NPC encounters.

I have an Olde English Bulldog, been around since the 1970s I think, that is primarily boxer/staffy with few minor bits of other dogs. They bread them to get back to the way Bulldogs looked 300 years ago before inbreeding pushed their faces in, shortened their legs, and took about 5-6 off their life expectancy.

Well, I hope the life expectancy bit pays off. I wouldn't trade my goofy girl for nuthin', and want her around for a good, long time.

hedwards: Unfortunately, I'm going home before the local dog eating festival, I was really looking forward to eating my neighbor's poodles.

OK, not really, but if somebody had asked me this months ago I could have found an answer.

P1na: Interesting. In Korea, they seem to only eat one breed. It's quite a tasty breed though.
You're only supposed to eat "Meat dog" here, but I wouldn't be surprised if other kinds are eaten when nobody is looking. The apartment management put up signs warning to keep dogs on their leashes and not let them wander. I'm guessing that was part of the reason, the other part of the reason is that it's nasty having piles of dog crap on the floor.
To be fair, I can think of a few examples of dog companions in video games that aren't German Shepards:

- Koromaru from Persona 3 and Missile from Ace Attorney are both Shiba Inus

- Missile from Ghost Trick is a Pomeranian (this game was created by some of the Ace Attorney developers; incidentally, one of them has an actual Pomeranian named Missile)

- The Mabari war hounds from Dragon Age: Origins, including the one you can save, are reminiscent of bull mastiffs.

- The Dog in Fable II can be of several possible breeds, but the German Shepard isn't one of them.

Dalswyn: Well, in Torchlight, I think the cat is your companion.

Telika: I had indeed misread the question. But still, given that you do all the hunting and grabbing while the cat manages the finances and the social interactions, this is still a matter of debate.

Also, I still haven't checked who's in charge in Hot Tin Roof.
No self-respecting cat would say 'boss'. Not without some heavy hissing and grimacing.

OMG just remembered, didn't Risen have optional parrot and monkey companions? Or was it a parakeet? Or a macaw?

rtcvb32: I want a pug animal companion!
Just opened this thread to post this.

Well... I have a pug companion in World of Warcraft.

:P Well that isn't going to convince me to get WoW, but at least there's some diversity somewhere...

legopig: Noticing after the Fallout 4 reveal vid, the German Shepard. Got me thinking, in almost all games and films I can thing of that has a lone hero with a dog companion it is almost always a German Shephard (almost becoming a trope in itself). I know they are great dogs, loyal to their core and brilliant guard dogs and my all time favourite breed. But there are plenty of other dogs that make great companions, like a Staffy, St Bernad or Rottweiler .

Fallout 4, Call of Duty, I am Legend to name a few.
Well, obviously that iz because German dog ist ze best dog, ja!

I don't know, I think Corgis are pretty awesome. But I admit that is largely due to Cowboy Bebop's "Ein".
Dogmeat from all the Fallout games is an "Australian Cattle Dog" in honor of Mad Max's dog, which was that breed.
Speaking of dog companions, I'm the only one that seems to think these are funny. :P

No, but you're one of the few frequent posters who would post that second one =)

I actually laughed out loud at them both, and then realized it's been 33 years since that song came out. Now I'm just sad at how old I am.

snowkatt: i misread that as dog companies actually
Dog companies are also usually German Shepards. Their large size makes component manufacture much simpler and cost effective. Chihuahuas might look like they're thrown together from leftover scrap, but they're surprisingly difficult to build.
