Since I don't know much about "Videogame Corporate Shenanigans" I could be very wrong... but isn't THQ also part of Embracer? Does this mean that there's now a slim chance of getting the Borderlands games here? Or will it mean that we're getting even less games?

Anyone, feel free to add more info if you want.
Honestly it all depends, Deep Silver is also owned by Embracer Group but there are still a number of games from them that haven't appeared here on GOG so I think they are taking a hands off approach with some of these companies and allowing them to do there own thing.

Embracer Group had already bought Gearbox quite some time ago.
What's new is that it has now also bought 3D Realms, CrazyLabs, Digixart, Easy Trigger, Force Field, Ghost Ship Games, Grimfrost and Slipgate Ironworks.

They are for all intents and purposes a huge behemoth, unfortunately not much has changed for GOG releases.
They've become a real heavy weight. :)
I don't see Borderlands making its way to gog though. :P

[...].
What follows is my understanding:

THQ Nordic IS Embracer Group. To simplify and make it not quite right, THQ Nordic started growing quite a lot in 2016-2018, with acquering for example Koch Media and Gearbox. Those new acquisitions where held by a new parent company called THQ Nordic AB. But (and this is a big butt), you still had the 'old' THQ Nordic GmbH, who held the older games / companies, but operated differently from the new companies bouhgt up.

However, the confusion now was that you had two different (although related) companies called THQ Nordic, and to make it easier they decided to rename the parent company THQ Nordic AB (as it really did not have a specific brand identity) to Embracer Group in 2020.

So we now have the umbrella corporation called Embracer Group which had 8 different direct subsidiaries, including THQ Nordic GmbH, Gearbox, Coffe Stain, Koch Media etc. Depending on how they will structure it, this will now grow into a larger number of direct subsidiaries. 3D Realms will most definitely be one of them, the brand name is just too good. (it is callled direct subsidiaries., as the direct subsidiaries may have subsidiaries of their own...)

edit - and no, this does not mean that it is more or less likely that certain games will come here. each direct subsidary operate on their own, they are just held by Embracer Group. so while THQ Nordic GmbH games are likely to come here, it does not mean that Gearbox games will.

Duke's Atomic/Megaton editions, Manhattan Project and Balls of Steel would be great to see relisted.

Well, they have some things in mind that are similar to GOG philosophy: "Embracer announced their intentions to build a huge games archive to “embrace the history of games.”

While this is related to physical copies, they may have a weak spot whether to release all games they have rights to, that are not available elsewhere.

ps. I suspect that sooner or later they will buy GOG (or CDPRed).

Fire Randy Pitchford, please? :P

P.S. I honestly find a bit scary how fast the group is growing. They are acquiring EVERYTHING.

Embracer Group is not a game publisher. They are a Holding company that is comprised from several game publishers, all working independently of each other. The only thing that will change with this acquisition is that a part of the money that you would give to one of the previously-independent publishers, will now go to the Embracer Group, instead.

Yeah, not much change should be expected, at least in Duke's front for sure..

Comment from 3d Realms crew member from their Discord channel regarding this article:

3DR - Plokite_Wolf — Today at 2:43 PM

Again, for us to do literally anything with Duke Nukem, one of two things has to happen:
1. Gearbox needs to say so on their own
2. Embracer has to shuffle IPs internally again
Until either happens, all such speculation is dead wrong.

2K has publishing rights to the Borderlands games, so it's their call. Any games with multi-player content that they brought to GOG had the multiplayer elements stripped out, maybe it would be too much to bring Borderlands games to GOG without online modes.

In other acquisition news, Focus Home Interactive has acquired Dotemu:

It will only be a matter of time before The Crimson Permanent Assurance catches up to them.
