Since I kept hearing amazed questions like "You haven't seen Game of Thrones? How's that even possible?" and since it has gotten an amazing 9.5 review score average on imdb.com, I decided to start a GoT marathon for the four seasons. It helps they've just aired all them on the TV here.

I've now seen the first five episodes of the first season (half of the season). Is it going to get any better, or is this already representational of the rest of the series? I admit I am not hooked, everyone is just conspiring against each other (except that goody-shoes hand of the king, and his wife I guess), and everyone just talks too much. It seems to be going nowhere, or at least very slowly. I don't find any of the characters exciting or likeable, the story is advancing slowly and even going in circles, etc.

And the way they keep mentioning how lucky they are the hordes of enemy army can't cross the Narrow Sea (because they have only horses, no ships), and at the same time "winter is coming! winter is coming!"... I presume the long winter will eventually come, and the hordes will ride over the frozen sea? That would be too obvious... I hope it doesn't take several seasons before that happens.

If it will get somehow better and "different", then I guess I can continue watching. Otherwise, I'd rather save that time for something more important, like playing X-Wing and Tie Fighter. I'm ready to give it a benefit of doubt, as I recall Babylon 5 was also initially quite boring and uninspiring, until maybe the second or third seasons where it really picked up and got exciting. I really liked how some of the B5 characters and their relationships evolved, like the lizardman and the man with a funny hair-do, or the chick which got some superpowers and could kill Shadows and shit with her black eyes, if I recall correctly.

Note that I haven't read any of the Game of Thrones book(s) (I didn't even know this was based on some books), nor played the game even though I have it on Steam, probably from some cheap bundle.

If you are fan of the series, what is it that pulls you to it?

The trends:

Nudity: More and more gratuitous going on until mid season 3 when they scale it back in order to make more room for...

Graphic violence: Some ok fights, generally more intent on showing blood being spilled than decent combat, but as a martial arts fan I suppose I wasn't going to be impressed by the inelegance of it all. Indeed it's probably more accurate and more fair to how things turn out in fights (i.e. someone gets a lucky blow / strike). However as the seasons progress it does seem to become a matter of trying to find ways to kill people in ever more graphic ways.

Politics: Is pretty much as you see it so far, there's reference to it, and that's what the books are about. Unfortunately I don't feel it's really given enough focus, with the series more intent on the mob than decent intrigue. Season 2 is quite fun at Kings Landing. Ultimately it's regularly dminished by the "Fuck it, I'll just have him murdered" solution that seems to be the only way to keep the number of characters down to something that could plausibly be wrapped up (though I have my doubts it will be in anyway a decent conclusion).

Plot: You've seen the White Walkers, there are dragons a coming, and there's witchcraft and betrayal. It just feels like a bit of a sideshow.

You're probably guessing I am somewhat disallusioned after 4 series. It's not bad, I don't regret watching it. The acting is good, filmwork all good. It's very well done, I just feel it's not quite what people say it is.

I think its a very well done series. I have watched all but the last 2 episodes of season 4, and that is because I have not been in the right mood to watch them yet after what happened in ep 8. Its a strange feeling when a TV show can have such an emotional effect on you. I read about 1/3 to 1/2 of the first book before the series ever started, but stopped mostly due to not liking the writing style and am surprised at how much I now like the TV series.

I suggest you keep watching more episodes before you decide its not for you, I think I do remember it being a little slow at first.
Honestly the only way to find out if *you* would enjoy it is to just go through it yourself. No one can answer the important questions for you since everyone has a different perspective on the same events. What's an exciting development for one is dull for another.

For me personally, I don't particularly find the universe or the characters interesting. I'm just all "BOOBIES!" and it can't hold my interest. However, it may be the opposite for you.
I love the books and I really like the series. But if you don't really think it's your cup of tea after 5 episodes, then it's probably not worth pursuing, IMO.

Yeah, just getting a general idea whether there is something to look forward to, or if I'd like the series, I should have been hooked already during the first season. I guess I'll watch it more, it's not painful to watch (like Star Trek Next Generation :)), but still a bit meh so far, having now seen about 1/8 of the first four seasons. Maybe I was expecting too much due to all the hype. I don't recall seeing any other TV series hyped up so much before (I mean, 9.5/10 on IMDB? That seems quite high, usually even good movies and TV series get something like 6 or 7 there).

I've already abandoned True Blood a long time ago as the series didn't seem to have any real direction and it was too much just soap opera drama, and I am unsure if I want to continue watching Walking Dead either, as each season starts to seem quite similar in retrospect: in the beginning the sheriff and his merry men are going to build or find some haven to live away from the zombies, or get rid of the zombies for good... only to lose all that at the end of the season, and be on square one once again (on the road, surrounded by zombies). Fjuck it.
OMG.. GoT is one of the best series evarr! Y U no like!

No seriously, it's witty, dark, full of political conspiracies and shocking twists and with a touch of magic.
For me it was incredible so far! (S4)

S1 is the top, so if it didn't hook you at all.. there isn't much hope.
However, fantasy is my favourite genre, maybe you just prefer other settings.

As a generic appreciation ranking, for me:
Game of Thrones> Breaking Bad > Lost (stupid final seasons!) > Dexter (great at start, then repetitive + ugly ending) >> Battlestar Galactica (big space.. soap opera)

Hmm, genuinely good twists could save the day (Narrow Sea freezing over wouldn't be such). I'll reserve further judgement to the end of the first season, maybe I'll watch episodes 6-10 tomorrow because it is a day-off from work (Epiphany).

yeah watch at least to the end of season one. If you are not hooked by then, stop watching.
Season is (imo) the strongest season, It doesn't really get better after that nor does it really get different.
So if you don't like it just watch something else. Luckily there is so many good tv series these days.
Apart from the first season, the rest of the show sucks, just read the books .
I am not thrilled with the books. I seriously disliked both of the two episodes that I lasted watching the series. The nudity was pleasant, the dialog was arch, the Peter Dinklage was awesome. Are boobs and Dinklage enough to sustain interest? For me it was no. Obviously, others have other opinions, but as always it's a matter of taste.
I'll read the books and watch the movie (in this order) when the dude will finish the complete series. prolly 2020 or something
I watched a bit of the first series and the first episode of the second series, I just couldn't get into it.

I have read all the books so far, but for me they seemed to get progressively worse, but a decent enough read all the same.
Its not the greatest show ever, but its definitely in the top 10. If you aren't liking it yet, you probably won't. For me, the characters, special effects and acting are so strong that I binge watch it.
Books and show are pretty much average, it just got popularity due to killing of main characters but it seems the author is struggling with the story now after killing too many characters and there is chance he will pass out before finishing the books.
