The recent release of Nox Archaist (which I am playing through right now) got me thinking a bit more about modern games for vintage platforms, and that leads to an interesting issue with the genres of such games. As time passed, there's the obvious technological advancement, but there's also the evolution of game design, and the emergence of new game genres. So, there's the possibility of games being released in modern genres on vintage platforms.

(Definition of period and non-period: "period" refers to things that were common during the system's prime; non-period refers to things that were not.)

The game I'm playing, Nox Archaist, really does feel like a period game. If I were to pick the game it's most similar to, it would be Ultima 5, which was an Apple 2 game. On the other hand, one could imaging a JRPG being made for the Apple 2, complete with story sequences and linear gameplay, and I am wondering how that would feel. It would certainly be an odd experience, don't you think? (You aren't going to see JRPGs on any vintage computer that isn't an MSX (unless you count Ys, but I don't consider that game an RPG, although the first game apparently *did* get an Apple 2GS release)).

(I've heard of a game for the TI99/4A called Realms of Antiquity, which is a WRPG of the sort that you did not see on that platform.)

Planet X3 & Attack of the Petscii Robots. One is a tile based RTS whose look of vintage would date it before the likes of Dune 2000, the other is a top down action game meant to run on the Commodore PET of all things; something of which barely ran games.
