i usually only purchase GOTY versions of a game to make sure i have all of a game's content by the time i play it.
i purchased Grim dawn before the first story expansion due to a failure on my part to do some research before i bought it.
the point is that its a great game thats recently received another expansion with the devs saying another may or may not be on the way.

having become a fan of this genre, i discovered titan quest, a more than 10 year old game that is still receiving updates with no obvious end in sight.

from a different genre, Pathfinder (kingmaker) seems to receive story expansions which have nothing to do with the main character and seemingly may not be valuable to enjoy the story mode.
its getting to the point where im uncertain which versions of the game are worth purchasing or if there is a clear end to some of these games's development.

i suppose the question is "whats wrong with making a sequel with all the freedom from newer engines etc.

this reminds me of games from ubisoft or similar publishers where you need a map to figure out what you are getting when you play the game.

lastly to fans of these games and others similar, do you feel that this constant development on some of your favorite games is actually worth it?

this has bugged me for some time now, so i really your opinions

GRim Dawn has done nothing but get better. And since the game is so excellent and the Devs have not released a plan to keep publishing expansions, every time they do it is a surprise. It's not like those shady sellers who trick you by overwhelming you with versions, at least in this case. Every DLC is substantial and adds a lot to the game. And for a complete game, every DLC is needed. It's not a checker board of buy this version to get this.... They don't sell a season pass or versions of the game with different DLC, they sell the game and the DLC. Buy it or not as you wish.
Definitely a mis-leading thread title.
Was expecting "talk about games that never end" aka games that have no set endstate of "fight endboss, roll credits, game over" scenario.

After reading the OP fully, want to ask the OP...

...have you played Just Cause 2 after playing Just Cause 1? Because JC2 fulfills your "whats wrong with making a sequel with all the freedom from newer engines etc." question.

So do Dark Shadows 3 hybrid FPS games, Boiling Point, Xenus 2, and the Precursors. Each game has a similar gameplay framework with skills/factions/vehicles/hidden missions, but ramps up the gameplay with each new game (that utilizes a newer version of the dev's in-house engine). Unfortunately, right now though those 3 games are only available via Steam, for many hard to quickly explain reasons.

It's cheaper and faster to re-use engines and assets than it is to build everything from the ground up once again.

Counter: what's wrong with working on and continuing improve what's already there, good, proven? Why throw it all away for a fresh start?

Sometimes it's good to start afresh, but if anything, I think more game developers should devote time to old titles. However since most don't, this is left for fans.. which results in mods that are often illegal to redistribute.

i apologise for that failure to communicate.
the intend was not to mislead, more a failure on my part to write as if other people cant read my mind.

Only because you're upside down!
I know how the OP feels. I'm also an OCD completionist and because of that had to avoid Paradox games for some time now for example. Seems like we have a lot of waiting to do :)
