Hi folks,

Are there some games that you think have characters with "personality"?

I'm looking for characters written by devs, like the Jagged Alliance series, Planescape: Torment, or the Baldur's Gate series. Each character is memorable and has things to say, would take action based on their own choices, even better if they interact with each other, instead of having the story revolve around our main guy.

Basically, games that have gotten you attached to your crew and don't feel like just moving pawns around.

Any recommendation?

Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins comes immediately to mind.

All of the Persona characters I became pretty fond of, especially Teddy.

I can definitely remember Catherine, and Catherine...

Cate Archer from the NOLF series.

Noober from Baldurs gate is memorable, but not in a good way.

Wing Commander IV is excellent in ths regard.

Agree for Vampire. Add "The Witcher" please. For me, 1 cuts the sweetest deal on characters with personality. San Andreas, too. Obviously, our Master Thief Garrett and denizens of the city. Maybe FEAR characters too (i know i loved our "brother" and his character was expanded upon in the non canon, 1 expansions, too). I am certain on the backside of my mind i had many more to comment, but memory is starting evading poor, old me, as of late. If only i could direct forgetfulness at will only towards scarring experiences...

Wizardry 8 has you create your party, but the various voices available have their own personalities, so as long as you don't give the same voice to more than one character (and if you do by accident, you can change it after starting the game), you should get a good mix of personalities.

Also, Wizardry 8 has NPCs, some of which are recruitable, each with their own personality. I find RFS-81 to be rather funny with some of its robotic lines. You also have Vi Domina, of course, and many other choices for companions to fill slots 7 and 8.

Don't forget: The non-recruitable NPCs, at least those with names (as opposed to things like the generic Higardi Patrols wandering around town), have a fair amount of personality themselves.

if you like Star Wars, the KotOR games have characters with personalities, but they aren't "great", and you can actually influence them to work towards being "good" or go down the "evil" path with some/convince others to do bad things.

Sam, from Serious Sam - seriously!
Lo wang, from Shadow Warrior - you no mess with!
Etc.

There are hundreds from every type of game across several decades. Might want to narrow it down a bit.

Anachronox

Dragon Age: Origins. All the characters in your crew have deep backstories, and you learn more about them throughout the game by talking to them, and doing their personal quests.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. All three games. I was mighty surprised by the main characters - Van Helsing and Katarina. The voice acting, their relationship, the way they both make fun of each other and actually talk serious. It is amazing! And other characters in the world are special as well. Again, voice acting is done masterfully!

Even cows have their strong personality in the game.
