Thanks everyone it was found on Goodreads. The book is called "Thief's Magic" by Trudi Canavan, not as Steampunk as I was remembering, but I do remember it being a good read.

Hey, so that's why it sounded so much familiar - I know other books by Trudi Canavan but I haven't read them, so it's very likely I've heard about this books as well. I might give it a go!
