I’ve been looking for an RTS similar to AOE, and (preferably in the ancient or medieval era) and the only ones that have come close are EE/EE2 and Dawn of the Modern World. Both were ok, but I just didn’t feel as strongly about them as I have for AOE. Praetorians was ok, but a bit too repetitive.

Are there any other games that fill the same void on here? I’ve looked through previous topics but most seem to recommend games with a more futuristic setting like TA and Supreme Commander. While I love both of those games, I still miss having something DRM free and like AOE.

Any help would be appreciated.

On here? Not really?

But I might know a title outside that parameter.
There are the anno games of course....

otherwise only fantasy comes to mind, titles such as Spellforce,Warcraft or more turn based titles such as Field of Glory:Empires

and if DRM is actually not that much of a problem a Total War title could be considered too? Three Kingdoms for example is a great game or the ever saluted Medieval 2. Most Total War titles need to be only played online for one session, log in and boot off, after which the game can be enjoyed offline
I was going to say that as well. @OP Northgard maybe? It's Viking age but with some fantasy elements. https://www.gog.com/game/northgard

Ancestors Legacy is another RTS on GOG set in the Medieval age.

Total War is TBS not RTS... however, great games. My favorite history / historical game is CK3. I think you can actually launch it outside of steam so technically it's DRM Free.

https://www.gog.com/game/imperator_rome is on GOG and is a good historical / ancient age RTS.

If you have a DVD-ROM drive and can find the blue coloured Age of Empires Collectors Edition DVD-ROM version (published by Ubisoft of all people), that particular version has all the earlier disc checks removed and is completely DRM-Free. Apply uPatch (AoE1) and UserPatch (AoE2) and it works fine, in widescreen, etc, up to and including W10.

There's Cossacks: Anthology
Just a note - since op already mentioned Empire Earth and Empire Earth 2, there is also Empire Earth 3 available.

Some other possibilities:

American Conquest + Fight Back

Celtic Kings: Rage of War

It looks exactly like the AoE (as the artistic style). Only it's set in ancient China.

https://www.gog.com/game/emperor_rise_of_the_middle_kingdom

Then there's Celtic Kings set in ancient Europe.

https://www.gog.com/game/celtic_kings_rage_of_war

Maybe Hegemony Ancient Greece?

https://www.gog.com/game/hegemony_gold_wars_of_ancient_greece

And then there's Stronghold series that slightly reminds that sort of RTS.

https://www.gog.com/game/stronghold
https://www.gog.com/game/stronghold_crusader
https://www.gog.com/game/stronghold_crusader_2

There are also some fantasy themed games that are sort of Ancient/medieval era if you're interested?

Edit: I can't believe I fell for this fake thread.

yea, i went a bit short on the term, though calling total war a tbs game does not really hit the mark either, right? To someone unfamiliar with the series it would be quite unexpected to find a real time tactical combat uhm simulator where up to a 8000 single models ( oke oke grouped together in formations up to 40 formations against 40 other formations ) can be seen fighting ;)

Actually I think it would be both an TBS and RTS... I forgot about the real time battles. When I played Total War I only played on the campaign map, as I never cared for the battle aspect of it.

If OP is looking for something like that there is: https://www.gog.com/game/oriental_empires

It’s not on here, but 0ad is what you are after:

Not ancient or medieval but I second for Cossacks. One of the best and most impressive historic RTS out there.
