I had the idea of building one place to show everyone who believes in the point expressed in the thread's title that their belief is on shaky grounds. It gets tiring explaining that a legit buyer of a game (or any piece of media whatsoever) can run into issues with DRM - far more likely than a pirate would.

Basically the aim of this thread is to list links to articles and blog posts of legit buyers who had issues with DRM, with the goal that believers of this claim can read these links at their own leisure and find out for themselves whether they will continue to believe this claim - or not.

Please suggest links to similar experiences!

Should we really entertain silly positions? Seems rather pointless. The last thing to do is to take them seriously. Same with "Everyone who defends DRM is a shill!"
Trying to change peoples beliefs is a very scary place to be. Good luck we're all counting on you.

Those with closed minds will never have an issue because it's how it's supposed to be and it's easier to go with the flow even if it's not good for them they'll still believe it. To them the articles you post are because those users are doing something wrong. Trying to explain to these people is futile, they have to broaden their horizons themselves.

Good luck.

I had issues with a game (which caused me to get a wired connection) due to DRM.

When C&C4 first came out I got it being a big C&C fan. What I didn't know is that it needed to have an active connection all the time (I only play single player) if it lost the connection (like it did alot when I was wireless) then whilst it wouldn't kick you out of the game, and you could keep playing it would stop saving and not allow you to save at all.

So if you got tired and wanted to quit you would have to re-play from where you lost the connection. Even if you got the connection back then the game's DRM wouldn't allow you to save until you quit the game and when back into it with a active connection (so you would loose all your progress.)

Had I got the pirated version of the game rather than actually brought it, then I wouldn't of had to deal with that. Luckly EA patched it out eventually so the Origin version doesn't need online, and patches brought the retail version upto that version as well.

Another one:

Simon The Sorcerer 5 was only ever avaliable digitally. Sortly after the game's release the company went into insolvency, meaning that the game got removed from sale.

Now the games DRM was only ever 1 activate. I brought it, and if I activated it then needed to re-install Windows for whatever reason I had to contact the store I got it from for them to remove the game from my account and re-add a new version, so I could activate it.

However since the game's removal, that is no longer an option and the games activation servers have been removed anyway so even if you had a unactivated version you couldn't activate it.

Admirable try, really. But I fear the type of individual you are up against are either mentally unable to comprehend this or to scared to try. They are usually the yell louder makes right type. And in the rare cases where not: you are the enemy anyway already so everything you say can be discarded as wrong without reading it. You have to wait for them to fall flat on their faces when that world view collides with reality and than you can lend a helping hand and a few hints.
Let's get this out of the way...

Ok, proceed.

Why you lot enjoy dividing up the forum and making it a preach heavy zone is beyond me. Let people believe what they want and stop being that twat trying to force their mind to change.
I never bother arguing with people that say this anymore. They're not worth the time and frustration, and won't listen anyway.

Why would anyone do that?
Speaking of Sega, it looks like they pulled Denuvo off the Shenmue Steam release.

I don't know but if there's money to be made I'm missing out! :p

Rumor has it that its quite easy actually. All you have to do is look what kind of DRMish software do you want and is around already. Pirate that already existing code, tweak it a bit, give it a fancy name (i.e. something exotic like "Piranuvo"; similarities to other names are completely and totally unintended and coincidental) and start printing money. You now just need to become big enough fast enough so you can have some quick little out-of-court settling going if the original company gets on to you. ;)

In my experience a few years ago assumed Pirate when your game wasn't installed in some Steam folder - because some people equalled PC gaming == Steam...
Now with the UPlay and Origin and whatnot competing to be the biggest PITA this has actually let up - and if you believe in wonders or not - I've even read several times now on places like the Steam forum that people actually would prefer GOG and DRM-free* - and they weren't stoned to death on the spot.

*with the usual caveats - AAA and updates.
