What replaced them? Holograms? Animatronic monsters that feed on human flesh? The matrix?
THUNDERDOME!!!

It's already happening right now for some people. Video games still exist, but their tastes and priorities change to other hobbies. For example, reading, outdoor activities, board games, exercise, streaming TV/movies, tourism, etc.
While technology exists, I imagine video games in one form or another will continue to exist.

If you are talking apocalyptic times though, then yes society might break down enough that video games and maybe most technology disappear ... at least for a while.

Failing that last, video games are likely to just become more virtual and more intrusive into every day life, perhaps where eventually the distinction between reality and fantasy will be blurred.

Imagine looking out your window (screen) and seeing exactly what you wish to see ... perhaps something different every day.

Imagine your partner looking and being exactly like you wish them to be.

Imagine doing your dream job for real ... virtual real.

And so on .....

Life could be one big video game.

-Dopamine injections
-Gambling software
-Walking simulators
A holodeck program simulating my room with my video games as it is now.
There is only war, obviously.
Porn?
Who cares because we will all be dead by then.

To really answer the question, first you would have to define what is a "video game". For instance, if by "holograms" you mean some kind of 3D game in space, I would still consider it as a video game, just as I consider VR headset games to be video games. Just more advanced video games as what we have today, as far as display technology goes.

I don't see the need for people to have some digital entertainment and (even competitive) games going anywhere. The technology used for it may change, but who cares? As long as the holograms and matrix virtual reality are fully DRM-free, I don't care.

LUL what? As far as I can tell, the direction has been exactly the opposite, for years or even decades.

More and more people, even common non-hardcore gamer people, have moved from those other activities, more and more to spending their times with "video games", or social media. Including from watching movies or TV.

Right now there may be a slight wave back, as people are going out more and more "after" COVID epidemic.

It's a net flow here, though it's reasonable to say there are more people joining than there are quitting given the positive growth in revenue and numbers. The people leaving the gaming ecosystem is what I'm referring to - former gamers are using their spare time to work on other activities like relationships, building a family, and other hobbies. In some cases like yours, it's not impossible to do all those things. But it's hard to fit in gaming consistently (say 8+ hours a week) if you've got a busy professional life, family, friends, and other hobbies without compromising at least one of them.

Yep I can see a far future where life is so fantastic that no-one wants to play some silly video games.

Or ....

When the Universe ends, so will video games ... if not before.

Unless ...

We are all just living in some video game ... and it never ends ... until dinner is served ... and it's lights out.
Holosuites, DS9 style.
Video games will become totally obsolete once they have the technology to create viable hologram girlfriends, like the one depicted in the film Bladerunner 2049, for example.
