Freedom of choice. Optional client. Cross-play. Coming soon to all gamers!

Earlier today (or was it yesterday for you?), during the [url=http://www.gog.com/news/cd_projekt_red_gogcom_summer_conference]CD Projekt RED and GOG.com’s Summer Conference we dropped the news about our next big step forward! GOG.com has always been home to more and more of the the best games in history (for Windows and Mac), both classic and new. Differing in shapes, flavors, and sizes they had one thing in common: they were mostly single-player, and our focus was mainly on the experience of a singular gamer. If that's your thing, nothing really will change. You can always enjoy your favorite games 100% DRM-free on GOG.com, with no need to activate your game online or remain connected to play your single-player title. Just like GOG.com has always been about.. But what if you want to play with your friends?

Today we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform that will finally provide the GOG.com community with the easy option to play together online. GOG Galaxy will allow you to share your achievements, stay in touch with your pals and get the updates for your games automatically. We've developed this technology to improve your GOG.com experience. We think GOG Galaxy really deserves your attention and we hope many of you will give it a try! But, here's the great thing: it is totally optional, so it's all up to you! If you do not want to play online, or use our optional client to access these features, then no worries, you will always be able to play the single-player mode 100% DRM-free, and download manually the latest updated version of your favorite title from our website. Now, for one more feature we call cross-play. We always believed in an open world for gamers, with no obligation to be tied to a specific platform or client; and this is why GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada. We’re taking care of connecting GOG.com and Steam players, so just sit back, relax and give it a try.

Talking of which, we are proud to announce the soon-to-come launch of the beta phase for The Witcher Adventure Game, a faithful adaptation of the board game of the same title. It allows up to 4 players to play together, whether they use Steam or GOG.com. Cross-play at its finest! If you wanna get the chance to try it out, please visit and sign up to get in the queue for your beta access key. You can also simply take advantage of our amazing [url=http://www.gog.com/tw3]pre-order offer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which includes 2 beta access keys for he Witcher Aventure Game, delivered to you as soon as we start handing them out to public.

We believe GOG Galaxy has the power to provide the best of both worlds. Playing the single player mode of your favorite game, 100% DRM-free, while still having the OPTION to use our soon-to-come client for an enhanced experience (auto-patching, achievements, and much more) or play online with other GOG.com (and Steam) players if you so wish.

There will be more GOG Galaxy titles coming up this year, so stay tuned for more news and get the word around!

Trilarion: Was there maybe any blue news about it?
Nothing was said about stand alone installers unfortunately. From what they've said, I gather that installed games will have the option to auto-update, but unsure about the installers.
Destro did say they are monitoring the forums though, so I do hope they implement such functionality as well.
My reading comprehension sucks, was there any mention of when we should be expecting the new client?

There was just an announce. No dates (just 'more news in 2014'), no features, just the 3 concepts in the video (cross platform, optional, freedom of choices).

The only thing we know yet is that a "limited" pre-version of it should be used for the "this summer" closed beta of Witcher Adventure.
So how will the achievement system work on Galaxy? I hope it's enjoyable and something to aspire for. It need not be boring. Obviously any "achievement" is always an optional unlockable, but it's fun to achieve something and be called on it.

Galaxy needs to make achievements available to those who are new to GOG or who simply don't spend much time here, as well as have achievements for people who obviously spend a lot of their quality free time here and have for years, and who have spent many a dollar on GOG's games.

There could also be achievements for giving away valid giftcodes and having them claimed, as well as having achievements for simply logging in or posting helpful messages or topics.

And would the current GOG rep system be somehow integrated into the Galaxy system and reflect achievements? While many don't care about Rep, that's because it doesn't do anything other than give an image of how long you've been here. If Rep actually gave something in return, that might entice more people to get it up.

I'm just brainstorming here :)

JinseiNGC224: achievements
As long as there is a way to turn them off. The only achievement I would enjoy is the one saying I wasted this much time of my life playing this game.

Haha, well I wouldn't call it a waste, as long as you don't regret your time spent on the game(s) :)

I'm fine if some people want them turned off. And I don't want stuff popping up incessantly on my screen like a mosquito doesn't leave me alone outside in summer time (aka, my backyard right now). I just hope that if they do have the system, that it has an incentive to use it. No one wants a broken or dull system.

"Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time" - Bertrand Russell or John Lennon or some other dude

Just randomly throwing that thought out there :P

On that note, not only should the users be able to turn them off, but the developers/publishers shouldn't be mandated to include them. I've always found it stupid that DD services make the inclusion of achievements mandatory.

Achievement unlocked! Congratulations, you're a BUM! :D

Seriously, I would like the option to turn them off too.

Steam doesn't require achievement support and many games still release there without them; I think that is only a requirement for consoles.

Ha, i unlocked this "real-life achievement" a long time ago! :D
Will people who are using chrome be able to use the client or will it be like the downloader and not work for them? It would be nice to have access to my games again.
Lots of multiplayer patch updates today, i.e. the STALKER series ^^

Ebany: GoG Galaxy will only be for those who want it, everyone else will continue as they are now. It's an optional client which will only be required for multiplayer (which is expected anyway)

goldragon: Read here:

"Basically, we will be updating the installers to have Galaxy functions while remaining standalone"

Installers will be repacked.
So it's not optional to have it in your system if you'll install the game.
Only optional to use.
This would be a requirement for any game which has a multiplayer element, it'll be repacked so it's compatable with Galaxy.

It's much like when Gamespy went down and many patches were released to remove/change the multiplayer options. GoG games simply won't work on Galaxy atm.

My advice would be to wait and see before turning your back on GoG. I've found them very reliable and good on their word. They believe in DRM-Free as much as we do.
