Thanks, rtcvb! I, too, loved Joust. No Atari anymore though knowing my 4 year old, the vultures would likely scare him a bit haha. Similarly, Ultima is probably too much for them currently. I'm a huge RPG person so it's killing me I have to wait a few more years before they we can play these together.

I highly second the Creatures series.

My own son played them quite a lot when he was young (and well before GOG existed). He loved them. I was pretty happy to see them here on GOG, and purchased them - but mostly for nostalgia; since he's an adult now. I keep thinking I'll fire them up one day just for the fun of it..

It's why I was hesitant to recommend Minecraft. If you want 100% creativity with no violence then it gets very difficult. Starmade might be one. Idk how much action it has, but that is a label. http://store.steampowered.com/app/244770/ I'm trying to think of builders and that's the problem. Usually you're building forts for defense or bases to attack from.

OH. If you want a really good ones, check out Toki Tori http://store.steampowered.com/app/38700/ and Crayon Physics Deluxe http://store.steampowered.com/app/26900/ - these are completely age appropriate. Not builders but puzzlers.

When they're older, Portal and Portal 2 are great at building logic. You can even make levels so they have an infinite amount of problems to solve.

When the time comes to introducing roleplaying games, I recommend the Paper Mario games (The Thousand Year Door in particular). They have a good aesthetic, and their combat system is rather engaging. For example, jumping onto a Spiny would hurt Mario and cancel his attack - but your Koopa ally can spin himself into that same enemy, knocking it over. With the underbelly exposed, Mario can now directly attack with his jump. Alternatively, Mario can use a Pow Block to cause a earthquake to knock it over, or apply a hammer.

I think Banished is a nice builder where the only adversary you have to face is nature itself, in the form of changing seasons. But it may be a bit hard for a 4 year old.

Thomas Was Alone is a platformer which is kid friendly and has no violence.

Rocket League seems kid friendly as well given that it just soccer with cars and has split screen support so all three of your kids might be able to play it at same time provided there's enough controllers. It has up to 4 player split screen support, so you may be able to join them as well.

Once they are a bit older you might get them to play Civilization V, I am not a parent so I could be completely wrong but it feels like a nice way to get them interested in history and about the way that our society has developed from the ancient times.

Hahahahahaha! Yes, I also plan to show them Duke Nukem. Mainly for the strippers with tassels. They need to learn.

4... yeah just a little young... When he reaches 7-10 you can probably introduce him to the older computer games. Honestly i couldn't hardly read when i started playing Questron. You just press all the buttons to figure out what each does what, and then just walk around and explore.

On the other hand, if you got an authentic Atari controller, those things are pretty tough. Other Atari games to consider (probably via emulator) would be Spy Hunter, Jump Man, Realm of Impossibility, Superman, Spy vs Spy, Astroids, Qbert, Defender, Missile Defense, Pole Position, My First Alphabet, Clowns, etc.


My mom said as a kid (4-6?) she just set me in front of the computer and i would watch it for hours, so maybe just the demos running, or maybe the demo scene where they push the hardware to the limits. Hmmm with that in mind you could probably get one of those Rasberry Pi Zero's and put the atari emulator and stuff on it, then if he breaks it you only lose $5 in hardware :P (Plus the joystick... and/or keyboard)
