Try the Dizzy games. Fantastic Dizzy (aka "The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy") is probably my favourite of the series. It has elements that are similar to Metroid but there isn't any combat in it.

The PC DOS version has the best visuals and the Amiga version has the best music.
