madness alright
ive just gotten this game and the requirements for it are insane !
who the hell do microsoft think they are kidding with these requirements ?

i mean really
you need a pentium II 266 at the very least to get this to play at all
or a pentium II 233 mhz with an 8 mb video card to play it
8 mb 8 mb ?! i got a 2 mb video card that used to be good enough but no !

it wants windows 95 98 me or 2000 ..well that wont be a problem my laptop is running ME
what ? dont look at me like that i think ME is fine

but then but then they want 400 mb to install it
400 mb ? i got 4 gig thats it thats my whole hd and i only have 750 mb left !
and i am NOT going to uninstal sims and its expansion packs it took me ages to finally install them

so who the hell do microsoft think they are ?
they gonna buy me a new laptop or something ?!

fuckballs im going to play the sims instead

in case nobody has noticed it yet yes this is a joke
i do have the game though
and 15 years ago these requirements
pentium II 266 mhz
8 mb video card
400 mb
800x600
a quad speed cd rom
windows 95 or better
would be quite daunting on my laptop i had at the time nowadays my computers will probably laugh themselves in to a stupor over them

anyway the point of this thread other then mock outrage is to look back at games whose requirements were once daunting but nowadays you'd shrug your shoulders at them
so which games where they and what were their requirements ?
and what did you try to run them on ?

i have a feeling wing commander 3 will crop a few times
TL;DR
Do you even POSSESS a shift or caps lock key?
Crysis makes me laught ATM, probably Witcher 3 in a few years aswell.

It runs great on my PC and in the dictionary under "Piece of shit" it says "See tinyE's computer".

Either way there is no racing so screw it. It's all tricks and time trials.

I thought you were posting on a phone and didn't care much about capitalization or punctuation. This was the same game that was somehow installed on a few systems in my school's computer lab. Pretty much every class was a race to grab those which had this game.

Isn't that more Sachys' line of work?

I remember playing Ultima VIII on a 486 / 25mhz with 4 MB of ram. And being outraged at the 3 minute saves and how bad scrolling would lag when you'd move.

I don't even think I had the system requirements with the version I had bundled with a sound card or cd-rom. Looks like I was a little bit under the minimum.

The 35 MB install was also 50% of my hard drive on that machine.

I meant Crysis 1 actually. It was talked about having gorgeous graphics and used as a benchmark tool for gpu-s for a long time

I remember everyone used to say that total annihilation had such high requirements, but I never got round to check for myself. For a while the game seemed like this almost mystical title with absolutely stunning graphics that no pc could handle.

What I'll never forget though was how impressed I was by Blade Runner's installation. The full install was over one gigabyte!!!

Talking about installation size, I had to borrow a spare harddrive from our neighbour, because mine was too small to install the first Half-Life XD

That's a good one to bring up. It was mostly the RAM requirement for playing large maps.

The multiplayer games would show how much RAM you had to everyone else in the lobby. I think that game may have caused more people to upgrade their RAM than any other game in history.
Something I still remember: Age of Empires 2 needed 128 MB RAM in order to run smoothly, especially when playing multiplayer on a LAN (you know, where people actually meet each other, sit in the same room, ... ahh, forget it! :p). Back then 32 MB RAM were common and - compared to nowadays - RAM was super expensive. Memories... :)

Interesting, and it does make some sense in retrospect. I remember that when I finally did see and recognize Total Annihilation for the first time I was little bit puzzled as to why it was such a resource hog. It looked nice, but not that nice. Of course this was just from screenshots in gaming magazines, so I never saw the scale of the game's levels for myself until many years later.
