Has anyone recently decided to make the transition from Steam to GOG? I've decided to because of CD Projekt Red's excellent policies on DRM and community. I did have a couple questions, though:

-Are there any games I can transfer to GoG? I own the entire Witcher series on Steam.
-How often does GoG Connect have their promotions?
-Are there winter sales?
-What can I do if a game is on Steam but not on GoG?

Usually during major sales. Yes there are winter sales.

Buy it on Steam because GOG sucks.

Not completely certain, but I think https://www.gog.com/witcher/backup works for Steam copies as well.

Big sales here tend to start a week or two earlier than on steam. See GOG sales | historical dates and forecasts

Politely contact the publisher, and ask them to make their game available on gog.
Vote for that game on the community wishlist
Play something else instead? :)

Welcome aboard!

You can try your Steam keys for these games if you have them: https://www.gog.com/reclaim

Here you can check the historical list of GOG sales:

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/gog_sales_historical_dates_and_forecasts/page1

GOG Connect will most likely happen for Winter Sale (first half of December probably).

If the game is on Steam but not on GOG you can vote for it here: https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games

Forget it and find some other game.

Hey, I tried that link and the Witcher 2 went through but it says my Witcher 1 key isn't one of theirs. I bought them at the same time on steam...

Besides going the support route, they also give away Witcher 1 if you download gwent (no need to play) and subscribe to the newsletter (you can unsubscribe immediately): https://www.gog.com/gwent-welcome-bonus

You dont have to make an immediate hard transition. Many people here use both. (I dont have/use Steam though.)

This is a bit unclear: Do you mean the "excellent policies on community" or the "excellent community"?
And what do you mean with "community"? Other than this GOG forum there is also a CD Projekt Red forum. And far as I understand they have different policies and members/community than this forum here.

Not sure what exactly you mean here but: With Galaxy 2.0 you will supposedly be able to play Steam games too but its still in beta and I dont know the details.

Better do research on the games you buy here cause they are barely up-to-date or missing content. You are also forced here on GOG to pick from a select few games that the GOG staff pick and if any games you want are Niche you can dream on cause they are biased against those games rejecting games left and right with that excuse.

I went from GOG to steam cause you have Bias mods on the forum and barely freedom of speech. But If you are what Cleve Blakemore accused GOG off you'll fit right at home.

There's no "supposedly", that's the mission statement for 2.0 and it already has working Steam integration.

I sent a support ticket, but afterward I saw this. Worked perfectly, thanks C:

I am going to say something extremely controversial here, so maybe my advice here's going to get shot down...

... But check if game you want to play is being offered by Xbox Game Pass for PC right now.

I hate subscription services, trust me, but I think it'd be better to pay Microsoft 5 bucks for a month or two until you beat the game you want to play and unsub right after than to pay Steam or Epic $20-60 for a recent game.

Case in point, if you want to play Outer Worlds, I think it's much better to pay Microsoft the $5 than to give Epic $60; just make sure to buy the full game on GOG when it gets 'ported'. I see Game Pass as a rental service, and based on my mental gymnastics, I think it's MOSTLY harmless to support that service. If it were a streaming service though, it'd be a different thing entirely. Anyway, Game Pass doesn't have THAT many games yet, but still... Check that first, is my advice. Just turn off auto-pay and only pay the $5 when there really is a game you can't live without.

With that said,it's just video games at the end of the day and if you REALLY want to play something and don't want to wait 5 years, go ahead and buy it. Don't even feel (too) guilty about it, you have a limited time on earth, so you should play whatever you want whenever you want. BUT if you are like most of us here and miss the good ol' days, it'd be great if you mostly stick to GOG. There's countless great games here if you're up to read some manuals.

Personally, I just don't even look at Steam or Epic. Again, too many games on GOG I want to beat. Once I am done with all those, THEN I'll check out the other stores.
