I always disliked Steam since it started getting forced into PC games as the norm, now that they do this I hate them even more. It doesn't matter if you own the original box copies of Steam re-released games you still have to buy it there to even use the mods which is hugely ridiculous and BS.

deja65: What a sad time we live in.The gaming communities are so toxic and cancer, that developers and modders have to resort to DRM to protect themselves.... This is the sole reason why publishers treat us like a turd, and only care about money.
Trust me, deja, some (porcine) publishers don't *need* a reason.

*glares at EA*

After the Sonic Gather Battle fiasco, I have my doubts. *facepalm* -_-U

Antaniserse: It's not really something new... even back in the days there were mods/fan made patches that used to check if you had a legitimate copy of the game one way or the other, by asking for the original disk or stuff like that.

Checking the Steam API is just a more up-to-date way of doing this
Back in the shareware days with games like Wolfenstein 3D & Duke Nukem, it was understandable but, these days, with full games being sold at non-steam outlets, it's salt in a customer's coffee. >_<

This is utterly ridiculous. What do modders gain by tying their mods to game ownership anyway? Fame? Defeating piracy? Do they ever benefit from such goals? They're fighting in a battle that isn't theirs, why?

Thankfully, the modding world doesn't often stop at these people, and if it did, derivatives can rise. I just hate it when modders do this.
