Hey GOGers, I'm looking for an open source pixel art software, any recommendations? I've seen a few like Tile Studio (mostly for games) and mtPaint but I would prefer something slightly more advanced than those two.

Recommendations for a ASCII art program would be appreciated as well!

I would recommend going onto the forum of any of the major games engines - unity, udk, godot, gamemaker etc. All of them have a section for third party software with descriptions and discussions on each.
Great suggestions so far! Any more?

Very helpful post! However, I think GrafX2 is FOSS, the source is browsable at the URL you've linked, and Wikipedia says it's under the GPL.

@OP

I've used mtPaint, GIMP, Aseprite and GrafX2 for pixel-pushing. Basically, anything but mtPaint would do. And it would do if it worked properly (transparencies aaaaargh).
