Time4Tea: I very much disagree with this. Support for a community-based MP solution is far better and more sustainable/preservable than a DRM-ed option, reliant on a server controlled by the developers or a third-party (Steam), which will inevitably be taken down at some point in the future.
Again, this is a DRM-free game store, and imo that should include multiplayer.
Perhaps there might be a way to have both options, but truly DRM-free multiplayer absolutely should not be neglected.
You're totally okay with paying money for a half-arsed solution as long as there are unofficial community mods that fix the issues? Are you for real? Put aside the multiplayer thing for a moment and consider if this happened to some other aspect of the game.
I'm not saying community solutions shouldn't exist, heck even in the game's heyday there were community-run servers to play with various community made mods like DoWPro (cause you couldn't use them on Gamespy). But the issue is, they are not the default option, so that's not where the majority of players are going to be.
And community servers can just as easily be taken down as official ones. Someone needs to be paying money and upkeep on those at the end of the day.
I understand your stance on the DRM-free store and extending that DRM-free thing to multiplayer as well, but ultimately, they aren't going to sell a product that's promoting community-run servers that are completely independent and that they have no control over, because who knows what could happen with them. Maybe they get taken down, maybe they get hacked, maybe someone makes inappropriate content accessible. I know that's unlikely, but if it did, that would reflect pretty badly on them.
The game needs to have a solution built-in that maximises the playerbase, and the way to do that is to support crossplay with an already existing and established community. Other games have done it. Perhaps, in addition to this, they can also support a community solution should players want to use it, but it shouldn't be the default.
As it stands, the already small community for this game is going to be split into 3 even smaller communities: those playing on Steam, those playing on GOG, and those playing on dowonline. And that's not going to be good for the health of the game.
