Quake II RTX is coming out June 6th for Windows and Linux as a free download that works with a copy of the full game. You'll need at least a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or higher.

"How Do We Get Quake II RTX?

On June 6th, at 6am PT, we’ll release Quake II RTX as a direct download on our website. This will include the first 3 levels of the game, released freely in 1997 as shareware, plus all our new technological enhancements, updated textures, and enhanced models.

If you have the original Quake II release, download and install Quake II RTX from our website, run the installer, and point it to the full copy of Quake II when prompted so it can copy over the full game’s levels and assets.

When you boot Quake II RTX, you’ll get to enjoy the complete campaign, and experience multiplayer with real-time path tracing."
Free isn't good enough, they would have to pay me to play something that ugly. It looks like some poorly implemented mod with effects that stands out like a sore thumb next to the original material.

That kind of remake could be awesome for Doom 3 or Quake IV though. This video showed the technology a bit better

You're not seriously suggesting that they should have redone all the models, are you? The only things I saw in this that were ugly were the models and that's purely because they're low poly due to the age of the game.

Looks funky, I dislike Quake 2, but would love to try this out with unofficial commercial mods.
I'm currently using Quake 2 XP. Looks more gorgeous than this, with much lower end hardware requirements obviously.

Who needs realism for videogames? Videogames need to be FUN, not REALISTIC. This is what game developers should understand. All those technology wasted just for this.

Did you watch the new video ? They completely messed up the whole thing, everything is too bright and shinny, nothing like the original game with its highly atmospheric dark techno-industrial look. The sun shines like it is a hot summer day in tropics, textures look too clean, lights indoors are too strong, etc. There is nothing left of the original atmosphere.
Looks nice, the brown of Quake 2 was always kinda ugly.

Suggestion? Where? It looks ugly, technical circumstances don't change how I perceive it.

Nothing is ever good enough for the Linux community. Including a decent operating system. :P

That's looking good. I might get an RTX card for this game. When they come down in price of course.

I own an RTX 2080ti but tbh I do not like the look of the game and how they got rid of the griddy look of Quake. but hey I will give it a shot and see how it looks at 4k and post some screens of it here.

it is legit a PR stunt to get people to adopt RTX with a free download of there childhood classic. I seen this all before but hey there are people who will take this.

I did watch the video and the effects looked pretty good. Yes, they are bright and shiny, but that's not what we were talking about. The original would have been extremely ugly by the GP's standards.

If that's the case, your standards are way, way too high. Considering that the game is over 2 decades old and this is basically just the rendering system, I think they did a great job.

But yeah, as Magmarock suggested, this is part of why so many people don't take Linux seriously. There's nothing about this video that calls for this level of hyperbole. As somebody else mentioned, it is too bright and doesn't really maintain the same atmosphere, but it is impressive what they were able to do with such an old game.

I would rather have a dedicated ray tracing card and games designed specifically for them.

Wow they have finally caught up to Unreal Tournaments green glowing projectiles lighting up the walls. :p

Obviously, a dedicated card would probably have done better. But, I think this is rather impressive. The RTX cards are high end right now, but in a couple years, the cards should come down in price and this sort of thing will be common even on midranged computers.

IMHO the real takeaway here is that raytracing is finally around the corner in a demonstrable way.

I'm sure it's technically impressive, I just prefer regular Quake II modded myself because this new graphical style doesn't appeal to me. In the context of Quake II, it just doesn't look good, I don't care if it's so technically advanced that they would need NASA to run it decently.

I'm having a hard time grasping what my OS of choice has to do with my graphical design preference though. The dots just won't connect since it's just as irrelevant as my haircut of choice.

This. There just isn't enough content to justify RTX right now, but it's relatively easy to add it to older game engines. I expect this to become a trend for a while.

IMHO the whole benefit of RTX would be in VR, not when you're playing stuff on a monitor. The usual SSAO/HBAO tricks are quite ok on a static planar projection.
