The only way out is deeper in.

UPDATE: Solving the puzzles scattered around this otherworldly landscape requires a certain calmness, something to put your mind in the mood. Could it be the official Quern soundtrack? After all, it does include almost two hours of Marcell Kerepesi's entrancing compositions.

Quern - Undying Thoughts, an atmospheric first-person adventure inside a bizarre world, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 25% launch discount!

You've found yourself in a place that defies logic, and yet logic is all you need to figure it out. A scientist has built something unique, something unwieldy and strangely beautiful. You're the catalyst, the one who must follow the breadcrumbs, brave the mind-bending puzzles, and ultimately conquer the island's many secrets.

The 25% discount will last until April 10, 1 PM UTC.

Looks interesting, but what are "reusable puzzle mechanics"?

Hmm, interesting... it seems to be going for a Riven-like vibe, but if done well it could be fun if you're into that. (I loved Riven and Obduction, and to a lesser extent Myst III and IV.) It looks great visually... Wishlisted for now.

And re: the negative comments, it's true that there are a lot of games trying to capture the same feel as the Myst series - sometimes maybe a bit too closely - but to be fair the only modern authentic take is Cyan's own "Obduction" and there seems to be an audience for more, even if not all of us are interested.

You took the words out of my mouth, so, could a blue text who dipped their toes into this shed some light?

As for the Special Sale: First-Person Adventures, I suppose the fact that I miss only one of the titles on offer says something about me...
Nice, but also this:

That one 5-star review has direct quotes (and a lot of para-phrasing) from the description of the game and claims the game is over 15 hours long despite it only being released 13 hours ago.

I know GOG reviewers aren't known for their modesty ("THIS GAME MADE MY CHILDHOOD 5 STARS") but this review doesn't mention anything close to a negative and is written almost like an advertisement, so take it with a grain of salt.

Some examples:
Description:
Quern is a first-person puzzle adventure game with captivating story, beautiful graphics and atmospheric soundtrack to set the mood.
Quern uses First Person controls, so the player can freely explore and wander around the island.
Immerse yourself in the beautiful scenery of the island as you discover new places.
Put your mind to the test with the increasingly complex puzzles

Review:
"I have played a lot of games that have tried to copy what Myst did and combine a compelling story, a beautiful world and clever puzzles"
"The developers behind Quern have gone the extra mile and added features that Myst didn't have. Similar to Real Myst, Quern is a game played from the First Person perspective and allows you to walk around freely."
"At the start of the game you are suddenly transported to a beautiful island filled with puzzles"
"There is a large variety of puzzles, which start out pretty simple but evolve into more and more elaborate and complex puzzles."
most 1st gog reviews = lie... its just a sad fact of life with gog

If its half as good as myst then I will grab it but based on a review (or twitch play) I can trust

I always read the negative reviews.
This is like Amazon and the 5 star reviews, which turned out to be all FAKE.

1. It was released in 2016.
2. Crap reviews are unfortunately a thing.

edit: relevant bit:
It's the pressures of reviewing to tight deadlines, of giving dishonest praise, that make commercial hacks depend on cliches for their reviews. Amateur reviewers suffer no such pressures; why then are most IMDB user comments so hackneyed and lifeless? I can only assume that these users are imitating the commercial reviews they see. They have decided that the correct way to review a film is to assemble a few stock phrases and package them as attractively as they can. Expressing their feelings and opinions -- expressing themselves -- doesn't enter into it. Indeed, commercial reviews have demeaned their critical language so much that self-expression is simply impossible.

The game is not new. At all. So you can find info about it around.
Also, from @Bonsewswesa's quote, I don't find anything unusual in that review. The standard review verbosity. I don't think other reviews will depart all that much from that scheme. I didn't read the reviews from The Witness, but many would probably use very similar sentences.

You can always read through the many user reviews on Steam.
There's also an official review on , where it was nominated in the Best Traditional Adventure of 2016 category. Or you can read other adventurer's opinions in the forum thread.

From what I've gathered. it looks good, and if you like Riven it's probably for you. It is a difficult game, though. But then, that's a staple of this particular genre.

The few reviews around say it's good, and probably the only thing the game is really missing is much more publicity and visibility in the media.
[I am in no way affiliated with the game or its authors]

Ty for article, somewhat depressing (as most human behavioural studies are now) but has a good point.

If you haven't played them already, I'd like to say you're not missing much. Obviously everyone is different, and maybe the things I disliked about III and IV won't bother you. But I believe they are full league's worse than any of the other Myst games, and not really worth playing.

I played the 4th one and really liked it. I still have the DVD but I'd gladly buy a digital version for convenience :)

However, I can understand your point of view as these episodes are in some ways quite different from the first two games.
I'd easily rate Myst IV as the second-best, after Riven. Totally worth playing. You could skip III, but I wouldn't say it's actually bad, it just...sort of exists.

Anyway I never heard of Quern, looks pretty good actually.
