It's strange, I have played this game several times before. This time, the screen turnes black, and stay's black. When I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete I get a message that say's Engine Fatal Error. Module:C:e physics scene::post inialize (): Failed to create physics SDK: Filename:<c:\prodject\platform\pc\source\engine\components\physics\admin\ge_physics_scene.cpp>.line #3497

Try running it in windowed mode.

If that doesn't work, then I'm going to say shrug.

Although I haven't played my GOG version of Risen yet, this this type of error rang a bell with me and I thought it might be related to the PhysX program.

You may be unaware that each game series has a forum, Risen's is located at:

https://www.gog.com/forum/risen_series

Searching this brought up the following thread, which should hopefully provide the answer to your problem:

https://www.gog.com/forum/risen_series/game_does_not_work

(To summarise: Risen can be picky about which version of PhysX you are running and to be safe it's best to load the version bundled with the game, even if you already have a newer version installed.)
